Had a clear lead over Sampras in the rankings, but played only one
more tournament the rest of the year (Essen - lost R16)

Sampras picked up a lot of points for the rest of the year:

Lyon - F
Essen - SF
Paris Indoor - W
ATP Champs - SF

to pip Agassi to YE #1 by 77 points.

Was Agassi injured?

nope, stunned by the losses to becker at W and sampras at USO. left him
disheartened. took almost 3 years for him to recover.

Andre also wrecked his wrist around this time and was out for 7 months
because of that.

What really happened to him was that he had dominated Pete on the HC's
in America in the summer of 1995. He beat him twice, including the
Canadian Open. He was heavily favored to beat Pete in the '95 USO
final and then choked it away. Pete played brilliantly, as he usually
did in big matches against Agassi. Andre always said it was his most
devastating loss.

The whole marriage to Brooke also screwed him up. Sports Illustrated
had an outstanding article about Andre last year, where he described
in vivid detail the end of his marriage to Brooke and how it depressed
him. They never spent any time together and Mike, Andre's dad, walked
out on their wedding, telling him, "this is not the right girl for
you, this will ruin your career."

Don't tell that to Whisper -- he says Sampras was favored over Agassi
in every match they ever played. :)

Considering his talent and the fact that he managed to win eight
slams, Agassi was a pretty mediocre big-match player, especially in
the first part of his career.

That was indeed a very good article. Agassi's father was an ass, even
if he proved to be correct on this point.

'heavily favored' is putting it too strongly. but he was the favorite,
just as he was in the 90 and 02 finals.

sampras showed a lot of guts pulling those upsets ...

The thing is Andre didn't ***- Pete just took it away by playing his
big game.  Andre was disappointed he was beaten given he was in career
best form that yr, but definitely no ***.  It was a super quality match.

In a way Andre got some of it back in '99 when Pete was beating him up
silly (4-0 in straight setters leading into USO), but had to pull out of
USO with back injury, allowing Andre to slip through & take title.

In retrospect Brooke probably helped him - he was never a consistent,
*** champ anyway, but the break-up forced him to focus on tennis.

true, he was just tired. had to play a grueling evening match v. becker
while sampras was in the showers.
