Is it neccessary to use the plastic protector on Carbon Masts? I have a Chinook
boom and a new Gulftech. Both booms have a *** strip in the front which seems
to cushion the mast. The masts are 80% and 95% carbon. Thanks for your help.

Same here, Chinook booms have the nice *** pad. It's been years
since I used the protector.

I use Chinooks and never use them with mine.

I asked the same question at a trade show once.

Answer: NO

The earlier clamp-on booms that didn't have the protection needed to be
"insulated" from the carbon mast by the protector.  The newer ones don't
need it.

Small point, but if you use a Fiberspar mast you MUST use a plastic mast
protector on the boom or your FS warranty will be voided.  The protector is
not require, however, if you use one of their booms on THEIR masts.  Go
figure, duh.

Let's see them prove I didn't use a mast protector.

Buy a Naish mast (Fiberspar) and there is no constraint.

That's the problem with warranties: the burden of proof is not on the
merchant.

With my newer Chinooks, I found that lots of jumps still caused some boom slippage
unless I used a plastic protector - even when it's cranked down plenty tight.

Gary... Cut out a piece of bicycle *** inner-tubing 2"X 2" and use that
instead of the plastic protector. I use that on my Chinooks and have no boom
slippage on my landings.
