Bogue Sound/Emerald Isle alternative to Hatteras ?

Anyone familiar with windsurfing on Bogue Sound in Emerald Isle, NC ?
Its advertised as an alternative to Hatteras.  Currently live/sail in SF
Bay area and contemplating move to NC, so any comparisons between SF Bay
and Hatteras / Hatteras and Bogue Sound would be appreciated.

Bogue Sound can be loads of fun!  It is a bit shallow and you have to stay
atune to the sand bars, but it is certainly an alternative.  I have found
that Harker's Island, about 20 minutes away, is even better than many
spots at Hatteras.  I have enjoyed some great wave sailing at Harker's.

Emerald Isle generally runs a sail size smaller than anywhere at Hatteras.

That's very true. And the bars are of oyster shells -ouch! (Experience
speaking here.)

Blaspheme!
I'm sure it *can* be good, but not as consistant as Hatteras. Right?

While that's true, the fact that this island runs east & west, enables you
sail the ocean without a sizable shore break. Which, for bump & jump'ers,
is a whole lotta fun!

Larry:
Hatteras is more varied and more consistant. But, Emerald Isle can be fun.
The island runs east & west and therefore has a minimal shore break on the
ocean side -great for b&j. The island is crested (hilly) and the
southerlies are usually blocked on the sound until you get out a ways. Oh
yeah, and be sure to ask a local where the oyster bars are... This area is
beautiful, tho.

The best that can be said about E.I. is that it usually doesn't have the
weed problem in the Sounds like Hatteras and its about two hours closer to
the major NC population centers.  In comparison, here's the truth:

1) The wind is usually calls for a sail size LARGER than Hatteras,
especially on anything with North in it.

2) The waves are considerably smaller.

In response to your comment about Harker's Island, I know that it doesn't
offer the variety which Hatteras offers. I personally enjoy Harker's
because it seems to be a little more side-shore during a Nor'easter.
Whereas Ego B., Avon, etc. can be out of control, and Hatteras Turnout a
little too offshore,  Harker's offers a little more of a negociable
entrance through the waves.

True, getting to the waves is a little out of the way, but, this seems to
add to the '***' factor.  Be friendly to the locals and perhaps they'll
show you the secret spots.    :-)                   Alan
