Maui rentals, lessons, and accommodations advice requested

Post by Jim Robins » Fri, 17 Sep 1993 01:23:02

I will be going to Maui for 2 weeks either the last week of October, or the
beginning of November. I am looking for recommendations for outfits from
which to rent equipment and take lessons. I have contacted Hawaiian Island
Windsurfing, Sailboards Maui, Windrigger Maui (a Mistral High Wind Center),
Maui Windsurf Company, and Hi-Tech Maui for information and price quotes.

I am presently leaning towards Windrigger Maui (Mistral High Wind Center)
as I have a Screamer, so staying w/ a Mistral board may work out easier for
me, and because their rental costs seem to be among the lowest; although
the radio instruction given by Maui Windsurf Company sounds interesting.
However, I would really appreciate hearing anything good or bad about any
of these outfits or any others that I may have missed wrt rentals and
lessons.

As well, my SO will be taking some beginner lessons so any advice on that
front would also be appreciated.

Finally, we need to find alternate accommodations for 4 days of those two
weeks, so any comments (good or bad), suggestions, whatever in that area
would be great.

Thanks

I didn't rent from Windrigger when I was on Maui, but I shopped there and
it was the friendliest place on the island. (At least that's how it felt
to me.) Since they have North sails, I would rent there, if I ever had to
rent equipment on Maui. Mistral boards aren't bad either...

Maui Hot Sails will let you sign out a demo sail free of charge (for
24hrs).  I swear by their gridlock sails, and you can beat the rental
price.  Purchase price ain't too bad either.
My other experiences in Maui are limited (after wind fine on this
Island) but I've had good experiences with High Tech.
Lastly have you asked about a discount?  If so I'm curious to hear who's
saying what.   they usaly range from 10%-20%.

I was at Maui in March this year. Have a Screamer at home too. So I went to
Windrigger Maui and picked up a Mistral board, 3 sails, mast, boom,.... for 5 days.
I could change the board every day (did that 2 times). Sails were from Waddel
(perhaps misspelled). They had no North, Neil Pryde, Gaastra left. But after some
talking they offered me a nice Mistral Wave Sail. Friendly guys. Especially the shop
owner and Brian, the Mistral instructor at Kanaha Beach. All in all it was a good
deal. I had a wonderful time.

Re: Maui Rental Discounts....
If you prepay and accept no refund (goodies only) SECOND WIND will
give you a BIG DISCOUNT... say Gary from Nova Scotia told you so (this has
worked before!!).. I know they have the best gear - for Maui conditions...
plastic does not work on Maui but hey, if that is all you can sail then that
is where you can start from... they have Fanatic and BIC plastic gear!

First of all, I wouldn't bother making an equipment reservation.  I
was in Maui for a week and only had three afternoons free to sail.
I rented equipment for a whole week so I would have saved about $100
if I only rented on the days I could sail.

I rented from Hawaiian Island and probably won't rent from them again.
I tried sailing on a Neil Pryde Combat Wave and hated it so I traded
my sails for a 4.7 and a 5.2 Gaastra Race Slalom.  One day the wind was
light so I traded my Stinger for an Energy, but they didn't have any
5.7 race sails for rent, so I got stuck with a Gaastra CSII.  I stopped
at Windrigger Maui and they said they rent Waddell race sails, so that
might be a possibility next time.  By the way, on a beam reach the Energy
is the fastest board I've ever been on.  I think my ASD can beat it in
a course race though, and it planes earlier (the Energy was not an XR).

I stayed in a condo in Maalaea (Kana'i A Nalu).  I thought it was a
nice place to stay, very quiet and relaxing there.  Just the sound of
the ocean (all units are oceanfront or ocean view) and the cooling
trade winds coming through the front door and out the back.  I thought
it was a lot nicer than the condos I saw in Kihei.  The ultimate would
be a week at the Grand Hyatt to decompress followed by a week in Maalaea
to relax.  I can also recommend the restaurant Avalon in Lahaina (I
still remember the soft shell crabs in garlic black bean sauce, mmmm)
and the Waterfront restaurant in Maalaea (get 2-for-1 coupons by
going scuba diving).
