Split Mast

Split Mast

My mast (CK35) has about a 3 inch split at the join of the top section.
I was wondering if anyone out there knew the best way to fix it, or
should it be tossed ?

Thanks in advance.

wrap it with unidirectional Graphite in Epoxy! West System markets rolls
of 1" wide material that's totally perfect for this sort of job. I think
they have a distributor in your neck of the woods.
Good Luck

I have always consider the mast a crictical component of rig.  It is
safer to toss it, but it might be repairable.

3 inch is already quite a lot. I tried to fix a mast split at the joint,
using unidirectional carbon ( 2 layers of 5oz quality, some more
over the crack & epoxy - holds so far but then i don't use this mast
in the waves and have retired it as backup now.

For wave use it is probabely best to get a new top - maybe you
find somebody who has broken a base. Otherwise it is pretty sure
to snap sometime, possibly destroying the luff sleeve of the sail.

An alternative would be to use it on a really big day - when you
are sure you will break stuff anyway :-)

I would wrap it with kevlar and epoxy instead.  I think the split will
have too much of a point load for graphite and end up snapping.  I
think you would be better insured with kevlar.
