HPL 190 versus Maui Sails 190 Carbon Booms

Hi. I'm looking to get one of these (expensive!) booms. Only option is
mail order so I can't tell if the high spec. weight of the Maui Sails
boom (7.4 pounds!) is a big negative "feel-wise". I know I'll like the
boom head of the M.S. better, and probably the stiffness too. But this
is to be my 6.5/7.4/8.0 boom and I'm having trouble with the idea of
ruining the feel of my 6.5 on 95 liter board with a heavy boom. My old
and failing Fiberspar 180 weighs in at 5.7 pounds and feels nice with
the 6.5 (though a bit soft with the 8.0). I guess swing weight is more
important than dead weight so if someone can tell me the swing weight
of the M.S. is not noticeably higher than the HPL that would be good.
BTW: I really like monococque head construction so not considering new
Fiberspar. Thanks for any info.

Thanks Kev for your informative reply and excellent pictures. Now I
get it. My main summer sail is a several year old Loft 7.4 and it
really doesn't need the big width of the M.S. rear end...so I think
you've helped me make the decision to go HPL.

I have in the windsurfing manufacturing business since 1987 and am
currently living and working near where both of these booms are
manufactured. Between the M.S. and the HPL boom there is no
comparison. The M.S. Boom is currently the best boom out there. Hands
down. I say this from a manufacturing process perspective and not from
a consumer perspective. However, if I were going to buy a windsurfing
boom I would not consider any other boom. The Maui Sails is the cream.
There is an even better boom coming but that will be in early 2009
(not M.S.) and not in time to serve you.
Still, you should do what makes you feel good. There is sure nothing
"wrong" with the HPL. Just technically... from the inside out, it is
not as advanced a the M.S.

Regards

Don

Hi Don,

Well...I may be able to wait until next year. But what would I be
waiting for? Can you say what the philosophy of this "better boom"
will be? I'd wait for "light and strong"! My take on the M.S. 190 is
that it is bomber stiff and well made as you've inferred. The only
thing is, the weight penalty of that almost formula like super beefy
and wide rear end is something that I don't want. After all, I'm not a
hard core slalom sailor. That said, I do appreciate a stiff boom that
is not too heavy and offers 3 rear end  pulleys for Adjustable Outhaul
usage. So will this "better boom" you refer to be along the lines of
"*** slalom" and similar weight to the M.S. or perhaps a better
optimization of stiffness, quality, and weight for a not quite so hard
core sailor like me?

Thanks,
Bob

The other boom that is probably worth looking at is the Neil Pryde X9
180-230 or 200-250.  However, it's even more expensive than the MS and
HPL offerings.  The NP X9 is is a narrower bend than the MS, but still
has oversized (but smaller than the MS) arms and extension tubes.
Hand grip area is a comfortable 30mm, and it comes w/ a triple pulley
rear end.  Monocoque front and rear construction like the MS.  HPL is
not monocoque AFAIK.  Fairly light at 2.8 to 2.9kg.

The lightest boom seems to be the Streamlined boom.  These booms seem
to have really low "swing weight" and are very stiff.

Don, can you provide some detail on that new boom,
my superboom you made 8+ years ago is showing some
signs of ware, so I'm checking what's coming on the market in near future, 3
things about MS I'm not totally sold in larger size: grip is too large 32 (I
love your egg shape grip at 28-29 on super boom),weight and boom head
doesn't support skinny without a shim
