I have in the windsurfing manufacturing business since 1987 and am
currently living and working near where both of these booms are
manufactured. Between the M.S. and the HPL boom there is no
comparison. The M.S. Boom is currently the best boom out there. Hands
down. I say this from a manufacturing process perspective and not from
a consumer perspective. However, if I were going to buy a windsurfing
boom I would not consider any other boom. The Maui Sails is the cream.
There is an even better boom coming but that will be in early 2009
(not M.S.) and not in time to serve you.
Still, you should do what makes you feel good. There is sure nothing
"wrong" with the HPL. Just technically... from the inside out, it is
not as advanced a the M.S.

Well...I may be able to wait until next year. But what would I be
waiting for? Can you say what the philosophy of this "better boom"
will be? I'd wait for "light and strong"! My take on the M.S. 190 is
that it is bomber stiff and well made as you've inferred. The only
thing is, the weight penalty of that almost formula like super beefy
and wide rear end is something that I don't want. After all, I'm not a
hard core slalom sailor. That said, I do appreciate a stiff boom that
is not too heavy and offers 3 rear end pulleys for Adjustable Outhaul
usage. So will this "better boom" you refer to be along the lines of
"*** slalom" and similar weight to the M.S. or perhaps a better
optimization of stiffness, quality, and weight for a not quite so hard
core sailor like me?
Thanks,
Bob

The lightest boom seems to be the Streamlined boom. These booms seem
to have really low "swing weight" and are very stiff.
