Plastic seat covers?

Post by Will Est » Sat, 22 May 1993 12:45:21

I posted this before and didn't get any answers, so I thought
I'd give it a second try: does anyone know of a manufacturer
who makes plastic seat covers for captain's chair car seats?
I want to protect my Toyota Previa from all of that wonderful,
indescribable mud we in the Bay Area love to bathe in.   Any help
is appreciated.

Interesting follow-up: I found one shop in the entire Bay Area that
specializes in car seats, and they want $100-$150 PER SEAT to
construct custom vinyl car seats.  I called over 50 different
auto stores, and every Toyota dealer in the phone book, and not
one had a waterproof car seat cover for a Previa (or any other
car, I might add).

Seems to me that there is a huge market opportunity here for
some company.  What person who buys a minivan doesn't occasionally
take it to the beach or some other place where the car seats
might get wet?  It has to be worth $25/seat to have some
simple protective cover that you could slip on top of the car seat and
then remove and wash down later.  Amazing that no one has done
anything to produce such a basic car accessory....

How I Keep My Toyota from Smelling Like the Bay...

Rather than pay big bucks for custom seat covers, why don't you put on
sheep skin or cloth seat covers with plastic sheets under them?
(Garbage bags would probably work.) Something has to absorb the water
and mud.  Either the seat covers will absorb the water or your floor
will absort the water, which leads to rusted floorboards.

Here is what I have done for my Toyota 4WD.  I have sheep skin seat
covers that I bought at Price Club for $35-40 each when my truck was
new (1987).  On the floor of my truck, I have the standard Toyota floor
matts with cheap rubbber rectangular Grand Auto floor matts on top.
If I decide to drive home in my wetsuit, I simply pull up the small
floor matt on the passenger side and sit on it while I drive (15 minutes).
My seats still look new and don't smell like the Bay. (You really have
to know how bad parts of the S.F. Bay smell to appreciate this.)

Generally, I change my clothes at the sailing site.  I always remove my
wetsuit and booties outside my truck.  I wear light nylon running shorts
under my wetsuit, which allows me to change outside and not bring in
lots of Bay water into my truck.  Usually my booties are so grimey, I
put them in a plastic bag. The wetsuit goes in the back with my other
sailing gear.  The booties get dropped off outside my door to dry off
and I rinse off the wetsuit in the shower while I'm waiting for the
water to heat up.

I bought a couple of yards of vinyl carpet runner...27" wide
and lots of little plastic spikes on the back side to hold
it in place.  The runner rolls into a 2' diameter tube, making
storage easy.  And it has protected my car's seat the few times
that I ended up driving with wet/dirty clothes.  Not very comfortable
in hot/humid weather, but its cheap and waterproof.

I recently bought a new Toyota 4x4 extra cab for windsurfing, I got a
topper for the bed so I can throw all my gear in withought worrying
about messing anything up, and I can lock it all up.  I didn't worry
at all about getting my old car dirty, who cares about an old junker
as long as you get there!!  About the only thing I've found to keep
the seats clean is throwing a couple oversize beach towels over them.

Its cheap, comfortable and keeps the mud off, does anyone else have
ideas?  Since it is new car,  I'm being increadibly ***
about keeping it clean.  Maybe in 4 years after I've paid it off
I'll mellow out a bit, but it would be nice if the interior wasn't
full of lake grunge by then.

Alex.

This price doesn't surprise me. Custom work of any kind is expensive.

Don't be so amazed, someone *HAS* produced such a device. After searching
several times through both Windsurfing and West Coast Windsurfing, I looked
as a last resort at the Windsurfing Express "summer madness" catalog, page
31, (I *KNEW* I saw it somewhere) and there is the long sought after
"seat protector". It isn't clear exactly from the picture how it fits, as
the back and bottom of the seat are different colors, or maybe it's only
for the back (which wouldn't make sense, but it is mail order...)

Anyway, I'm sure you know how to ask questions about a product. It's priced
at $28.00, marked *WAY* down from $29.00 (wow!).

You can contact Windsurfing Express at 6043 NM 167 Street, Miami, FL, 33015
800-843-7873, or FAX:305-822-2839.

Let us know how this turns out. You can't be the only one who has wanted
one of these after a "not quite high tide" Palo Alto session.

Geez, I'm a sucker for those Summer windsurfing 3.4% bargain sales. :)

Well I know I must be gettin really desparate, because I just ordered
two of these lovely *pink* on grey seat covers.  %->  Hmm, I think maybe
my next purchase should be some privacy glass so no one can peek in and see
the pink seat covers. :)

Remind me in a month or so and I'll post a review of these.

Some of the surfing shops in Santa Cruz stock them. I know Santa Cruz Surf shop
has them (41st Ave).

I have an O'Neill 'Windskin' suit which as all smooth neoprene on the outside.
It dries off completely pretty quick so I can drive home with my suit on with
no ill effects to my upholstery. I get a few dribbles out of the legs onto the
carpet, but thats all. You would get those anyway with a seat cover.

Please ignore the previous blank posting. I intended to say that I use a
good quality bath-towel as a seat cover (color coordinated with the car of
course). It lends itself to quick shakes, vacuuming and normal washing, and
I am happy with the arrangement. The towel is dedicated: it stays on the
seat at all times. Cheers.

I bought a 3' x 5' piece of coated nylon at a fabric store.  I keep it
in my gear bag with my wetsuit and put on the seat first on those
occasions when I drive wet.

I ordered them, and they are pink from top to bottom (the picture in
the catalog at least has grey on the bottom).  I called WE and they
claim that Pink is the only color this company makes them in.

I can't believe this.  One company in the whole world makes plastic
seat covers, and the guy who owns it is color-blind. :)  Just my
luck.

When I got my van, I went to a canvas shop and had custom waterproof seat
covers made (I'm a diver and I drive around in my suit a lot).  They cost
about $100 each, but they're worth it.  They stay on all the time.

But when you're windsurfing, why drive home in your suit?  I get into my
suit after I rig, and get back into dry clothes before I derig.  Feels much
better, IMHO.

I do take my suit off too, but I wear a swimsuit underneath, and it
does soak through when I sit on the seat.  Also, I tend to reach
into the car in-between runs, and this inevitably drips water too.
Finally, in my Previa, the two captain's chairs in the middle of the
car are being used as platforms to lay the miscellaneous gear on,
and most of that is still pretty wet, even after giving them some
time to dry.
