WHISTLING fin or fin box

Post by duboi » Tue, 30 May 2000 04:00:00

I just tried out my brand new board last weekend (Kinetic Free Mission
72) and I am very pleased with it.
However, when going hard up-wind a loud high pitch whistle came from the
back of my board. The higher I point the louder the sounds become until
the spin-out point.
I know that there was a lot of talk about Techno fins whistling a few
months ago but as I wasn't concerned about the problem at that time and
I didn't pay much attention to what the cause of the problem may be.

Is it a fin problem ? or is it the fact that there is a cavity
inside the box between the top of the fin and the deck of the board  (it
is custom made carbon tuttle box system)which makes like a sound
chamber.
The fin fits perfectly inside the box and is flush to the bottom deck of
the board. It does not move at all.
Is there any solutions to stop that sound ? my friends were really
wondering what the hell was going on when I was chasing them and causing
so much noise....and the fishes must have been freaking out...

Looking forward to your clues,
Francois

Does it happen with other fins? I have a 15.5' blade weed that moans
a little...I need to sand it I think.

Thanks a lot SWINDLE for your input, but there is no need to show your
affection towards me on the NG when you simply live next door...
As we have the same board and whistling fin now, at least we have an
easy way to tell who is the fastest : The one which makes the most
noise.

Later,
Francois

Obviously, the whistling sound tends to make you forget your goal:
To keep up with me!

 Hello Francios & Elliott:

I "could" say that neither one of you had these problems when
you had the Starboard GO, but I won't.

Several things can cause you "whistler board syndrome"
(WBS) (I think that acronym came out rather nicely, don't you
agree).
WBS can be caused by air getting down around the fin screws if
you are not getting a good seal, or not using *** of soft
plastic "seals" under the fin screws.
Another source could be the trailing edge of you fins.
I'd suggest trying a high end fin (System B or Tectonics seem
the best choices) as it may eliminate the WBS, and will probably
give you better top speed, better upwind performance.
But, since I can see that you two are in constant "competition"
I suggest you both get together somwhere in the no man's land
between your houses and decide which fin, what size, etc, so you
both get the same one, exactly.
This will serve to get rid of the WBS, but sustain the "friendly
rivalry" you two seem to thrive on.
Or, you could get a sheet of W&D abrasive paper, tear it
precisely in half, and each of you radius the sharp trailing edge
of the fin a little, and any other areas of the fin that are very
thin and very sharp. But be sure you both apply exactly the same
number of strokes, in exactly the same areas. We wouldn't want
one of you to have any unfair advantage, or one of you to still
have the WBS while the other sails quietly.
Have fun with your new K 72's guys!
Regards, Roger

Don't worry Roger,
The rivalry will go one better.
In 19 days, we are off to Maui. 15 days of windsurfing.
The issues of rivalry:
1-Racing - a little one sided affair, but, I'll give him a head start, and
tie my hands behind my back just to give him a little hope.
2-Aerials / Tricks etc. The helmets will be purchased, the body armor will
be worn. This is the discipline with the highest stakes.
Nevertheless, us of of shape Swiss guys from hong Kong will come out bruised
and battered, but with smiles from ear to ear!

See Ya,
Elliot
