Separating stuck 2 piece masts

A while ago there was thread on separating stuck two piece masts but I didn't
follow it too closely.  After rigging up on a sandy beach I now have this
problem.  Anyone know of any "sure fire" ways for pulling them apart ?

Separating stuck 2 piece masts

I had a similar problem with seperating my new 2 piece mast.
The salesman at my local shop said to rinse it out with water
and then twist it slowly apart, 2 people may be useful,
or one way is to keep the boom attatched as a lever for
really tough cases.

He also reccommended rinsing the booms out with fresh water
after sailing, which he did after helping seperate my mast.
I was surprised at the amount of dirt that was still inside.

hope it helps

This worked for me:

Tie a hitch near the bottom of the mast, then tie that line around
a tree or other immovable object.
Grab the top of the mast and jerk it against the retraining line
(it's hard to describe, but the action will become obvious).
Some tapping on the joint might help too.

Good luck.

Also try getting the joint wet first. This helps with booms, I haven't tried it
on masts. BTW, best strategy is to take everything apart every time it's used,
i.e, masts, booms, bases, etc. in order to prevent getting a lot of sand in
there in the first place.

I just used this to undo my 2 piece carbon (and it was *STUCK*):

- get a couple of 2" X 2" boards about 2-3 feet long
- staple a 18" length of 1" tubular webbing (rock climbing) to each board
so that about 6 inches of the webbing is stapled to the board

            |-6"-|
  ================
       _    -------------------------------------
 mast / \ | |       board                       |
      \_/ | -------------------------------------
          V
        direction of twist

- wrap a bit of old inner tube around the mast just below the seam on the
lower half (this is so the webbing has something to grip) and then wrap
the webbing around the inner tube (see above for direction)
- repeat this, just above where the ferrule should end, for the top half
  of the mast
- having two people now is *really* helpful; each of you just has to grab
a board, twist and pull.  Otherwise, you've got to find something to
lodge one of the boards in to, in order to twist and pull by yourself.

When I finally go my mast apart there really wasn't *that* much dirt in
the joint (I've had them stuck before so I'm always careful about cleaning
the joint before shoving the halves together) all I saw was some micro-fine
sand/dirt.

- You could also try a couple of clamp-on booms but you might not be able
to get them to clamp hard enough, without slipping, to get the job done.

Separating stuck 2 piece masts

I was standing on the carpet in Berkeley, I saw two (2) guys take a stuck
mast, each hold an end, and start the mast bending by moving each end
in concert, up and down together. This cause the joint to move, work
- the joint slowly slipped apart until each guy had a piece. I was
impressed.

On the other hand, I once had to cut a mast at the bottom to get
the teak base out of it (as few years ago, true)....

1) Get the joint wet.  Use water, WD40, or what ever.
Sometimes you'll rip the ferrel out of the lower half
of the mast, if you pull too hard.  Make sure you twist
while you pull apart the mast.

2) Find a few more people and have two twist and pull on
each half.  If this doesn't work go to step 3.

3) Find a second set of clamp on booms.  Place one set on
the bottom half of the mast and the other boom on the
top half.  Twist the booms like pipewrenches.  It helps
to have two people twist while two other people pull
   and twist.

Note: The sand at Crissy Field is Mother Nature's answer to
Crazy Glue.  The main reason I use a one piece mast at Crissy.

Good luck,

Kevin
