making new sails out of old sails

making new sails out of old sails

I once had to visit the sail loft after an unfortunate incident in the surf. I
ended up with a 2-piece mast and a blown-out sleeve right at one of the batten
pockets.  I took it to Buchan-MacLean sails on Northlake, rather than the NP
loft just up the street because he quoted me $40 instead of $75.  Anyway it
ended up taking the guy 3 hours to get all the layers put back together again.
I don't think he usually did windsurf stuff.  He charged me for two hours of
labor, or $80.  He did a great job, I think the sail is stronger now than it
was before.
It would probably take a few hours at least to cut a sail down to a
smaller size, and that could get expensive.  Plus the shape would probably be
all messed up because it was originally a different sail.  You could probably
pick up a used 4.0 or whatever for around $100 or less, I have, and be better
off.

are you the same guy who wanted to cut down a 10' board a few days ago?
