SAIL SIZE/SAILOR WEIGHT vs WIND SPEED

SAIL SIZE/SAILOR WEIGHT vs WIND SPEED

Post by DBlackm » Thu, 11 Apr 1996 04:00:00

Here is summary of first ten (decypherable) responses to SAIL SIZE
questionaire.  Until the database gets larger, I am reporting the average
Sail Area/Sailor Weight ratios.  As you would expect these vary by over
10%, however, the eight of the ten chosen respondents (all male) claim to
be expert and the other two  claim intermediate to expert.  As the
database growes, we may be able to see the effect of skill, fresh/salt
water, elevation and other factors.  There is a statistical (or clerical)
hiccup in the Wave Sail column at Bft 8, but the averages are otherwise
"pretty well behaved."

I'll repeat the latest questionaire revision for more data.  Either post
here or email directly to me.

WIND RANGE                                SAIL SIZE, (sq meter/lb)*100
mph        knots     km/h    Bft      wave    slolom    race

  4-7        4-6       7-11    2           (   )        (4.2)       (5.1)
  8-12      7-10   13-19    3           (   )        (4.2)       (4.3)
13-18    11-16   20-30    4           (3.8)      (4.0)       (3.9)
18-24    17-21   32-39    5           (3.3)      (3.6)       (3.5)
25-31    22-27   41-50    6           (2.8)      (2.9)       (3.0)
32-38    28-33   52-61    7           (2.4)      (2.4)       (2.6)
39-46    34-40   63-74    8           (2.5)      ( 2.1)       (   )
47-54    41-47   76-100  9           (2.3)      (1.9)       (   )

What I'm trying to pull together is what you have found to actually work
best for you, not theories or formulas.  When making comments related to
the wind speed rows, head them with Beaufort number at end of
questionnaire (e.g, Bft#4:  Equipe II with 17.5" fin) to make compilation
easier.
