Cheap Sleeping in the Gorge?

Where's the best place in the Gorge corridor to just pull in and crash
in the back of a pickup truck? Quiet, but with some friendly windsurfers
around. Showers? Cheap or Free

PS What's the "Bingen School House" like? Is it kinda private with
partitions? Or just a wide open room?

Windance has a web page on the subject at
http://www.windance.com/camping.htm . It is tough to find a place to
sleep without train noise in the gorge.

I usually pull into a nice white salmon, dalles, or hood river
neighborhood. Another idea is up in the orchards.

Of course, if you like that sort of thing, you're all set!  :-)

Loads of camping around away from the river. I've camped all over and
like the ridge road running parallel to the main highway up to Mt. Hood.
Fantastic views of Mt. Hood at sunrise and no wind/train noise. Its in
National Forest so its fine to camp and its quiet. In general National
Forest are the place to hang, no cost or night time traffic so you can
zzzzz in peace ;)

Get a Forest Service Map and check out Oregon and Washington. You can
pull into the woods and sleep anyplace in the National Forest. Just
bring water.

In regards to the Bingen School house it is a school with classrooms
that folks pay to sleep in, but I don't know any more details than
that.

In order to avoid train noise be sure to travel several miles away
from the river. Trains go up both sides. There are woods above
Underwood, and west side of Hood River you can pitch in. There is a
decent spot north of Lyle on the road west of town that goes north ( 1
mile, watch close cause it's easy to miss.)

Hi,
The Bingen School is a great place to stay if you enjoy company.  $11
bucks a night.  They converted the classrooms into mens/womans dorms
that are partitioned into cubes of 4 bunks (bunkbeds).  Bring your
earplugs if your a light sleeper as folks often stumble in the dark
around 2am when the Northshore Bar & Grill shuts down... there's alot of
snoring too.
At the Bingen Marina there is a small parking area that windsurfers
crash in adjacent to the actual Bingen campground.  Showers at the Hood
River Marina.

My favorite paying spot is the Windurf Ranch just east of Bingen about 1
mile. Lots of sailors staying there and good showers.

My favorite free spot is one of the 100 spots to park on the Oregon side
just west of the dam right next to the Dales. The white noise from the
dam is great for sleeping and drowns out the trains.

Check out Bingen School's web page,
http://www.gorge.net/lodging/cgoc/default.htm. I haven't been since '88 but
I'm sure it is still a great place to stay.

Hey, what's the problem with a little harmless train noise?  I used to
vacation by taking the freights during my carefree college days.  Having
slept near and on the trains, I can's see how a little gentle train rumble
could be anything but soothing.  Just don't sleep so close that your head
bounces from the ground shaking.  If the train going by disturbs your sleep
you REALLY wouldn't want to have spent the night in many places that I have
found to be REALLY uncomfortable!  Adventure makes it all completely worth
while.
