sailing along I-80?

Post by nmreu.. » Sun, 14 May 2000 04:00:00

I'm driving from Maryland to San Francisco for the summer and I was
wondering if there is any sailing along I-80. I thought maybe I could
break up the monotony of the road with a session along the way? Any
(un)friendly locals that I should look out for?

thanks,
nils

- - Lake Maconahay ( sp ?) It's near the Nebraska, CO border
and I highly recommend it. Camping on white sand beaches
in the middle of the praire. Wind can be flukey... but
great late in the day.

- - Well, there is Lake Hattie. A tiny reservoir near
Cheyenne. It gets good down slope breezes late in
the day.

In Wyoming:  (near Evanston) Sulphur creekL; great during the summer
(10 min of I 80)
In Utah: Rush Lake (past salt Lake City): get good thermals off the
GSL. (20 min off I 80)

Those two places are about 150 miles apart...

Contact the Utah windsurfing association for more details:

www.radiuseng.com/UWA (in caps)

All Utah sailors know those 2 places very well as they are our main
sailing spots during the summer

I always have three things in my vehicle when driving any distance: road
maps with all the nearby lakes highlighted, a WX radio, and all my gear. My
rig's been to most states from Orlando to Cleveland to Seattle to San Diego,
and my gear's gotten wet in many of those areas. Sorta relegated my car to
local commuting a decade ago.

Lorain, Ohio, which was the site of the 1993 US Windsurfing Nationals, is
right off I80.
Also, Wolf Lake, Indiana, right along the Indiana/Illinois
border, is right off of I80 and is specifically a windsurfing spot in an
"interesting" industrial area that might be an experience for you if it's
blowing SW when you go by (Call Windward Sports in Chicago, 773-472-6868,
for Wolf Lake and other south Lake Michigan sailing info).
I can't vouch for the Ohio locals, but I've heard they're all right - stop
by Frickin' Chicken for wings when you're in town, but don't forget to buy a
round of beers for the house to avoid any bad stares.  The Wolf Lake
windsurfers are quite friendly and helpful, but watch out for the local area
residents - mostly former steel mill workers, they'll chew you up and spit
you out.
Hope this helps.  ;-)

As you're getting pretty close to the Bay Area, there are Lake Washoe
in Nevada. Getting even closer, there is the Delta around Rio Vista -
be sure to time your arrival there for an early morning session, then
either stay on for the afternoon session or use the mid-day slump in
wind to drive to the City to sail Crissy that afternoon. Or, if you're
in the mood for it, take your big gear to the Berkeley Marina and hook
up with the locals to go sightseeing upwind towards Treasure and/or
Angel Islands.

All spots further described at www.iwindsurf.com. Summer is a great
time of year to sail around here, so I wouldn't waste much time chasing
flukey summer winds on inland lakes and just try to get here fast :)

It can get windy on some lakes near 80 in Wyoming.  I don't remember the
name of any of them.  I wouldn't try to catch them bit if it's blowing you
might want to stop and get your last bit of freshwater sailing in.  You
will most likely not be getting fresh water in the Bay area.

Lake McConohay (sp?) in Nebraska, near Ogolala.  Had an all day 4.5
session there once, it was really fun.
