I was out sailing today and decided the wind was not building enough to
make my day so I came in.  As I was taking my suit off, a man walked up to
me and talked with me on how much fun it looked like I was having.  I was
responding to him while he was looking under my board.  He stood up
straight, looked at me and said:  "What makes this thing go anyway?" (I
think he was looking for a motor)

I almost laughed out loud.  Dahhhh! I thought and then I explained to him
that it was the wind.  He said "Oh, sure looks like fun," and walked away.

I just had to share this and see if anyone else has had such a stupid
remark.

How about:

"Does that wetsuit keep you warm?"

"What do you mean there's not enough wind. There's plenty"
When there's not even a whitecap out there. Not even a significant
ripple.

"Don't you fall in?"

"What happens if you fall in?"

Or to a friend of mine once:

"What are those things on your board"
My friend: "Those are footstraps. They help keep your feet on the board."
(counting)"You mean eight people can ride that thing?"

How about the question I get all the time, from other windsurfers, when
away from home: "Where do you windsurf in New Mexico?"

I've begun answering "On the sand."

Some sailors aren't sure whether I'm joking.

So??? I don't know where is the New Mexico (maybe not far from
California) thats the only thing I know, I don't know if they have any
lake or sand and if you have a board with big wheel sand can get you in
amazing speed!!!!!

surf the board ??"  --Tourists at ***ia Key

I swear this is true. Back when I was sailing big boards in 85 I left
my hi-fly 500 on the shore (12 feet, 30 lbs.) & was carring my rig.
There were 5 or 6 people sailing in light winds. Someone walked up to
me and said" that looks like fun, what do you stand on?"

Do you really want to go out in this weather . . .

When it is blowing 25 with a light rain and a perfectly balmy 50 degrees.

I once tried to answer the question, "Why do you do that?".

I failed. The Navajo who asked the question seemed incapable of
understanding the concept of recreation.

Next time try explaining it as a religion, at your stage,
that's what it's become.  I bet he'll understand that.

I like that.

I am thinking of creating a "365 days" style calender called "Strange
Things people say to Women Surfing in the Water".

But you have given me an idea to expanded in to a general water sports
humor zone. Do you have any other quotes?

Thanks

What is there too much wind? ( when it's blowing 10 mph)
How much does one of those things cost?
That looks like alot of work!
You've got to be young to enjoy that sport!!
Aren't you cold in that thing!
Why is everybody sailing just back and forth!
Isn't that boring just going back and forth ( from my wife)

I'vr got to agree with Paul's wife ..
Why DO most of us just sail back and forth?
If it didn't leave the rest of us SOOOOO much room to sail right and left,
it'd drive us nuts.
We're grateful to the back'n'forth crowd; it's what makes the Columbia
River so uncrowded.
