Neil Pryde Mast Breakage... UPDATE

Post by (James Hw » Sat, 13 Jun 1992 17:36:34

Just a small follow-up report on how things are going in my small
tussle with the Pryde guys in Sydney.

Since I posted my tear-jerking story in mid-May, I've received
heaps of replies. Most of them helpful and some not so (Andrew!).
So to all of you, many thanks and to you, Andrew...

"Get a real board!" 8-)

Well, I've faxed the Pryde guys in Sydney 2 weeks ago but no reply.
So I ended up sending them a letter with receipt, certified mail
around this time last week.  As for the reply, still waiting.

Hope those guys get off their asses and get back to me with some
news.  Good news too I hope!

PS.  For those that are wondering what type of boom etc... I was
     using.  I had up:

         -  1 one piece Neil Pryde carbon 60 mast (but not for long)
         -  '92 5.5 World Cup Racing
         -  Pryde Boom (Powa Front & Easi-trim back)
         -  Aluminium Mast Protector
         -  Neil Pryde mast base with mechanical uni

Try faxing a copy to head office in Hong Kong and tell them
the problems you are having with not only your gear but
the reponse from the Sydney office. However, your local retailer should
have fully supported you. If faxing try to constructive so they can
learn from possible technical faults.

The Sydney officce is part owned by head office, so you should get
action.

As mentioned that mechanical uni may be causing internal fractures in the
carbon mast. It is known that this may happen under certain conditions.

Try another mast which your retailer should supply free, e.g. Sailworks
or Gaastra which are available in Aus.

Neil Pryde Mast Breakage... UPDATE

Post by Roy G » Sat, 27 Jun 1992 01:30:08

Hi I'havent tuned in for quite a long  time. But I did get a Ph.D in the
mean time :)

 Two  equipment notes.

ONE: Fiberspar replaced my broken  Red  wave  mast-  no
problemo.  Now, thats a company I can trust! Everyone should
buy their masts.

TWO: The Neil Pryde twin cam 5.5 is supposed to be wave
slalom and handled (before it disintegrated- see below) like
my $199 6.5 race sail :( The K-film monofilm  is  too  thin.
The  stiching  that  is  supposed to stop tears doesnt.  The
mylar crossed lines reenforcement section doesnt  work  well
enough.  The  little  plastic  gismo  for  downhauling  that
attched to the sail has the knits in  the  wrong  places  so
that  it breaks off when you downhaul. This sail is just too
flimsy. The nose of my board went through the monofilm  like
it  was butter. IMHO, the sail section that comes in contact
with the nose of the board when the sail  is  in  the  water
should be reenforced. In short: Dont buy this sail! BTW, the
sail is less then  9  months  old  but  Sailboard  Warehouse
nearly  had  a  fit  laughing  when  I tried to get warranty
replacement for it. They only warranty faulty workmanship or
materials.  I guess that doent include making sails that are
just too flimsy for any reasonable conditions.

     -Roy -yes I'm pissed.
.PP
P.s. This is the worst ever season in the midwest. If it wasnt
for Narayan inviting me sail in the bay area for a week I would
have only sailed 3 times this season.

>    Both myself and a friend have had experiences with these NP twin-cam

wave/slalom sails and all negative.  One was ripped when we first
downhauled it, just in the panel parallel to the luff... yes we were using
NP masts... my sail had the stitching coming loose in the foot area,
especially the batten pocket... another fellow surfer bought a NP 6.0
slalom (cam type) and went right through the window the first time he sailed
it... based on this and NP's latest video where they actually trash
equipment in order to impress joe consumer (or joess) I refuse to buy Neil
Pryde or recommend it to anyone - I will but their new harness lines 'cause
they are inexpensive and I just love tying knots in that purple plastic to
adjust them for length...

Have you ever thought about buying equipment that matches where you live?  Try
a course board and a big sail and you might just have more fun and not complain
about a bad season!

NO, NO, NO!

.Lake Eerie is a great place to sail. In fall and spring
our conditions are generally excellent with 2-3 days a week of
20+ (up to 70 knots sometimes :). Our conditions vary from flat
water to 16ft waves depending on the wind direction. I was complaining
about this  season in particular  not the location in general.

I think my equipment is just fine, thank you very much. I *could*
use a fanatic moskito, and a protech instead of my stinger, I suppose...
-Roy
Fanatic moskito, protech 8'6" and 9'3", windwing 2.5-7.0 (in 0.1 increments),
not.
