Use of FAQ's on the WWW

Post by Leon Migu » Sat, 25 May 1996 04:00:00

Hi,

I would like to encourage the reading of FAQ's (frequently asked questions)
from this newsgroup. Over time, some questions are invariably repeated, which

1. Increases the number of articles somewhat unnecessarily, and
2. Good explanations that have been posted in the past may be overlooked.

A good example of FAQ's which can be accessed from the net are

http://www.interlog.com/~aoldham/windsurf.html

which have been kindly collated by Alex Oldham, and cover almost every
technical question posted over the last few years. I am sure that others
exist.

Perhaps this (and other addresses) could be regularly posted to the group
so they are available for newcomers, as well as informing regular users
of new sites.

I'm certainly not trying to stifle any questions or contributions, but just
trying to maximize what we get from the group.

Cheers

Leon

Thanks for the comments.  They're much appreciated.

Unfortunately now that it's Windsurfing season I've had less time to
keep the page updated.  There's currently 71 topics, but I have 40
more off-line that I need to edit and sort before I put up on the Web.
It's all a matter of finding the time.

If anyone wants to re-post any of these 'FAQs' off my WWW page to
rec.windsurfing, they're more than welcome.

Alex.

Several of the groups I frequent have someone who does this regularly,
like every couple weeks.  It makes it great for newcomers to the
group.  Often, the first thing I will do when entering an unfamiliar
group is look for a posting with FAQ in the subject.

Is there any way this could be automated?

Sure there is! You have to "officialize" your FAQ and submit it to the
MIT team of volunteers. After that, you can use their faq-server machine
which posts the message every x days (you decide). Check out news.answers
for more details. (that's also where all faqs are posted BTW).

Sounds like a good idea... unfortunately I barely have enough time
these days to sign on and read all the messages.

Also, for this level of automation I would think the FAQ's should be
condensed much better than they are now.  Also, with 70+ FAQ topics
(soon to be 100+) I don't know if everyone wants this "Spammed" to the
newsgroup, even once a month.

Well, the FAQ posting could be a pointer to the website, with an index of
topics.  That would hardly be spamming, and it seems pretty reasonable to
assume web access these days.
