Making one-piece mast into a 2-piece ?

Making one-piece mast into a 2-piece ?

Post by Gary Wo » Sun, 02 Mar 1997 04:00:00

Hi all

After working to upgrade for a a couple of years, I have two
2-pc masts and one remaining 1-pc (430 NP Carbon wave).  I like
the mast and it works well, but it is a pain to transport because
it is a 1-pc.  I'm thinking of 'adjusting' it to 2-pc.

A buddy converted one of his old masts into a 2-pc by cutting it
and glassing in a tapered section taken from a broken mast to form
the ferule, then adding some reinforcement to the upper section where
they meet.  It seems to work OK, but it was an older mast to start
with, and no great loss if it failed.

Any opinions or advice on doing this safely (i.e. not trashing the
usefulness of the mast) ?  Specifically :

The mast in question is 30% carbon.  Would I need to have a 'ferule'
section of same material, or would a piece of old glass mast work ?
Any tips on fitting this or glassing/epoxying it in place ?

How much reinforcement would be required on the upper part that fits
over ferule ?

Any other gotchas I should know about ?

Thanks
Gary

As said to me earlier this year..
IF you wanna play, you gotta pay
You must be crazy to try this... if it breaks, youll  likely need a
new sail as well as a new mast.  I'd swop it/sell it/trade it.. less
risky and you get what you really want.

You cannot do that, mast are made with an extreme exactitude.  The bend,
the stifness and....are for the sail, and if you cut the mast, it will all
messed up. You can do it, but for intermediare to + you will see a major
difference, and it will wont work for new sail!!!
1 piece mast are better than 2 pieces but the inconvenien is travelling
with it. Try to sell it, it will be much better.

This is a bad idea.  You will destroy the mast...call ANY mast
manufacturer...it's not going to work badly...it's just not going to work.

As the original poster, I find the responses interesting to the original
thread.  I have received about 50% pro and 50% con responses.  The
'pro' side says it can be done no problem, and I've even had some advice
on how best to do it so the mast is least affected.  The 'con' side says
it will ruin the characteristics of the mast even if the surgery is a
success.

I appreciate all your inputs, I just don't know who might be correct.
I'm not committed to doing it, but with the price of a 2-pc today compared
to a 1-pc, its almost worth it to try it....

Anybody out there from Pryde or Fiberspar ( although I'm sure you'd rather
I bought a new mast... ;-> ) ?
