Dont know if anyone cares but this was the LEAST windy November week I
have ever spent in Hatteras.
Things were promising when we left Mass. Friday morning 11-8. Temps all
along the east coast in the 70's, SW winds 20+ mph... Of course
Hatteras was 14 hours away.
We got a late morning start and drove down the Delmarva penninsula, and
with the F250 with 5 boards on the racks atop the shell we decided to
stop before the Chesapeake BBT for the night.
Saturday morning the temps had cooled and the wind moderated. By the we
got to Avon it was 15-20 west. We got our house early from Hatteras
Realty, and rigged our big stuff (turns out this would be the best wind
for the next 5 days) (my big sail is a 6.9 and my S.O. is a 6.0). Got a
couple hours in before it dropped to well below 15. Did crab cakes at
the Froggy Dog (great crab cakes).
Sunday had wind in the 15-18 range early in the AM. Sailed the 6.9 for
an hour or so then the wind dropped. Pretty cold. I needed gloves. Did a
little shop hopping. We couldnt believe that we didnt see anything that
we needed or wanted. Baked a cake, ate in and watched a video.
Monday - winds 10-12. Went "birding" at Pea Island. Picked up some
fresh shrimp at Buxton Seafood and made shrimp Creole for dinner.
Tuesday - winds 10-12. Washed the truck.
Wednesday - winds 10-12. Weather channel marathon. Finished the
chocolate cake. Dinner from Bubbas Too (Bubbas in Frisco closes at
3PM). This is getting too easy...
Thursday. Finally, winds in the 15-20 range from the North. Temps in
the 40's. Sailed the old 6.9 once again. Retired for the day when my
gloved arms gave out.
Friday. NE Winds 20+ by dawn, increased to 30+ mid day. Temps in the
40's again. Sailed a couple hours on a 5.2 then 4.5 until my feet were
numb from the cold and arms numb from the gloves. I am getting too old
or too spoiled for this cold water stuff.
Saturday. Temps at dawn in the low 40's wind NE around 20. Cleaned the
house, packed the truck and headed out. By the time we were in Nag's
Head the wind felt like it was 15 or less. Wind crossing the Chesapeake
BBT was light.
Sunday. Back in Mass. By noon it felt warmer than any day last week in
Hatteras. Go figure.
Now where did I put the snowboards...
