I saw it too. Innaresting, cuz I was injured last year and had been wrapping my ankles in exactly the same fashion (tho I was using athletic-wrap tape).
The nature of my injury was acute tendonitis of the tendons running along the anterior portion of the ankle. These are the tendons that get loaded when you pull your toes up hard in the footstraps and push hard with your heel.
I'd gotten injured from a weekend prescription of...
I took a week or so off of sailing & running (kept on cycling), and taped my ankles like robby did in the video when I started sailing again (tho I cooked it up on my own on the advice of a EMT friend). I kept doing the taping thing for a week or two (until I didn't have any traces of tendonitis anymore and was back to running).
I think it was the trail run that really pushed things over the edge. the surface was really rutted and it caused me to plant my feet funny several times and stressed those tendons. Plus when running, one uses those tendons quite a bit to pull your toes back up as one is bringing your leg forward to take another stride. And I use them a lot when sailing and working to keep the board flat.
anyway, just fyi and all. I tape my ankles/feet this way now anytime they hint the same injury is starting up.
