Duct tape on your feet?

Post by Pete Bura » Fri, 07 Jun 1996 04:00:00

Hi,
I was watching the new Robbie Naish video R.I.P. and in this video Robbie is seen
Duct taping his feet.  In the action shots you can see duct tape on at least his
right foot.  Is this do to an injury or what?

By the way...Is anybody interested in starting a video trade group?  Windsurfing
videos are like $24.00 and I can't be droppin that kind of doe as much as I like to
watch videos on work nights.

Sail on,

Pete

Hi Pete,

I noticed this too, and I just assumed Robbie probably had developed a few
blisters from his many hours of sailing.  I was wondering where the camera
was when he had to take the stuff off.  Ooouuucccchhh...!

Duct tape on your feet?

I saw that as well.  My guess is that he was about to sail some extreme
conditions for that ankle to be able to handle without extra support.  His
ankle is possibly weak by design or by a previous injury.  In the gym
while weight training, I have seen big guys that are about to bench very
heavy weights wrap their wrist with duct tape.  This gives the joint more
strength and prevents injuries.

Just give me wind and I will sail.

I saw it too. Innaresting, cuz I was injured last year and had been wrapping my ankles in exactly the same fashion (tho I was using athletic-wrap tape).

The nature of my injury was acute tendonitis of the tendons running along the anterior portion of the ankle. These are the tendons that get loaded when you pull your toes up hard in the footstraps and push hard with your heel.

I'd gotten injured from a weekend prescription of...

I took a week or so off of sailing & running (kept on cycling), and taped my ankles like robby did in the video when I started sailing again (tho I cooked it up on my own on the advice of a EMT friend). I kept doing the taping thing for a week or two (until I didn't have any traces of tendonitis anymore and was back to running).

I think it was the trail run that really pushed things over the edge. the surface was really rutted and it caused me to plant my feet funny several times and stressed those tendons. Plus when running, one uses those tendons quite a bit to pull your toes back up as one is bringing your leg forward to take another stride. And I use them a lot when sailing and working to keep the board flat.

anyway, just fyi and all. I tape my ankles/feet this way now anytime they hint the same injury is starting up.
