Trip Report Lake Mohave 12/20-12/23

Post by trnspr » Sun, 26 Dec 2004 01:37:57

Hello:

Just back from a trip to Lake Mohave.  What a great place!

Quick and dirty it blew all 3 days that I was there.  5.0 day one.  5.7 day
two.  4.2 day three.

There are many, many places to sail not in the location descriptions that I
found on the internet.  It was cold but not too bad.  Kinda like the Gorge
in May.

Wind was gusty at times.

Swell can be large in the wide parts of the river.  In the narrows the swell
never got reliably larger than ***high on the 4.2 day.  But every once in
a while a larger swell train would come rolling through.  Good B&J
conditions.  Most easy to liken it to Stevenson on a Easterly.

Solitude is the best way to describe my trip.  I could have been sailing on
Mars.

If anyone ever wants info on the lake or my trip please don't hesitate to
email me.

Oh, and if you have a server and would like to host a couple of scenery
pictures I have a couple I could donate.  Gives a good view of the
conditions and local.

Thanks
Tom

Dude!!!  I wanna go!  Damn!  It's been kinda shitty up here for wind in
the Bay Area for as long as I can remember.  I'm coming down to LA for
Xmas, so maybe I'll take a little roadie out there.

Daily High temps for my visit were low 70's first day, Mid 60's second day,
high 50's last day.

Water temps reported at 52.

5/4 steamer kept me warm.

I am one of the lucky one's who can wear booties and not have it bother me
so I wore my booties and a polar fleece beanie the last 2 days.  The first
day my toes got a little numb after the 3'rd hour.

Looks like you had the place to yourself!  Is the wind seasonal? If it
still blows when things warm up a bit does it crowd up?

I am sitting in all of this so calif rain right now, and going stir
crazy.

Why sit around going crazy?  I just got back from sailing Mission Bay, 15
gusting 40 ;)  It was ok except for the low tide muck and stench, hopefully
it was that and not raw sewage, they smell similar.  Of course it wasn't as
toasty as I'm used to and squinting when the drops get big enough to hurt
is challenging.  Better than nothing.  Heck here in San Diego that's
usually the best wind, the wet kind.

Kirk.

The wind is seasonal there. It begins near the end of November, and runs through
April
(sometimes May). December & January are moderately cool (60s), but by late Feb
it;s back to 70s again.
Here's some historical data

Checking it on Mapquest, looks like a solid days driving from the Bay
Area.  Might be worth a trip, one of these days, although the average
wind seems to indicated that you could easily get skunked.

Look for a High pressure over Utah, or a call in Southern Cali for Santanas,
or of course, an approaching front.  The most consistent wind will likely
be North at Kathrine's after a Front has gone through, and a High pressure
has reestablished itself over Utah or the 4 corners area.  Typically good for
6.5-5.5 wind with dips into your small quiver, if the front was strong.
