Yet another Maui trip report

This has been done so many times before, I'll keep it short. Spent the week
starting Easter eve til yesterday (saturday) at Rays Friendly Beach House.
That's one of the houses listed as being just upwind of Kanaha and subject
to airport noise. I can say that after one day, the airport noise did not
bother me. At first it was noticeable, but for this trip anyway, the wind
made more noise than did the planes. And that's a good thing. If you ever
consider staying there to sail I can't think of a better option. Any of
those houses on Stable Road are great launches, and probably are worth the
extra money you spend on them. We seemed to have better wind there than at
Kanaha, but both were certainly exceptional. While we were there, a host of
pro sailors were out doing photo shoots and practicing, including Ricardo
Campello himself. It was fun to watch that.

Sailed 7 out of 8 days. One 5.5 day, a couple of 5.0 days, and the rest was
4.5 to 4.0 or better.

Two things that bothered me about Maui: First, the litter. We walked the
road to Jaws and it looks like a 2 mile continuous illegal dump, including
multiple abandoned vehicles, various and sundry appliances and tons of
trash and garbage. Same with the area near between the houses on Stable
road and Sprecks. It seems a shame to allow that kind of treatment of one
of the most beautiful places on earth. Second, I got bad vibes from locals
who weren't in the tourism industry, i.e., paid to be nice to tourists. I
can understand being tired of having tourists around all the time, but
where's that "aloha spirit" you hear about.

What impressed me most about Maui: The quality of sailors that sail there,
and the challenging conditions on the water. If I sailed there more often,
I'm sure I would improve.

That's to bad about the trash/littering. Is the Maui Windsurfing
Association still active?

Yet another Maui trip report

Yep, trash has been a growing problem on Maui that's exacerbated by an
expanding island population, never-ending influx of cars and hard
goods, minimal public transportation,***poor community planning,
Etc.   Localism, thankfully isn't as widespread a problem as the
trash.    I've often called this place a banana republic, but it turns
out that's an insult to all the banana republics out there.   Suffice
to say Maui has its problems.   Is it getting better?  We hope so.
The new Mayor seems to be doing a good job.   She seems to have less
tolerance for the corruption and shenanigans that plagued previous
administrations.  Maybe they can get something done.

The MWA is still active.  The president just called me minutes ago
from Kanaha beach telling me he's rigging his 4.2!

Sorry Kevin, my film crew (wife) did not travel with us this time. And in
my opinion, windsurfing and photography (in the same hands) are natural
enemies. And as always when they get into a fight, it's the innocent
(camera) that suffers. I did pick up a Digital Hero waterproof camera while
I was there and experimented with it mounted on the boom, my leg and on the
mast. Pretty cool, I have to work with it tho so I can figure out how to
get on the water video without it being***ed 30 degrees to the side.

Where did you sail yesterday? I flew home from Maui on a red-eye after a
full day of 4.0 sailing, got home at 7:00 in the morning, slept about 45
minutes. Went to Tomales at noon for yet another 4.0 session. This time my
wife came with me and thank god for that, because I could not keep my eyes
open on the way home.
