Fiberglass Mast Problem

Fiberglass Mast Problem

Post by Jennifer Barn » Wed, 02 Aug 1995 04:00:00

Hi,

I was hoping somebody out there might have a solution to a problem I've had
with fiberglass masts.  I own just a basic one-piece mast.  Lately, the
fiberglass has been coming off -- and into my hands :(  If I hold the mast up
to the light it sparkles with all the fiberglass.

Does there exist some kind of spray or shellac to fix this?  Also, does anyone
know why this happens?  I was guessing that maybe the sun deteriorates it?  It
has happened to two masts that I have owned.

Any suggestions are welcomed and appreciated!

Jennifer

Buy a new one-aluminum or carbon or go to a swap meet and pick up a used
aluminum one for a good deal-many people are unloading good aluminum
masts for carbon.  Aluminum are lighter than fiberglass and they don't
shed!  (I have carbon).  Shellac or paint will add unwanted weight.

All composite masts have this problem. there is so little resin on the
surface that any wear forces the glass or carbon to the surface. The best
fix I have found is to spray mast with a two part polyurathane finish.
This finish, being a resin itself, is quite durable and adheres to the
mast real well.

Jennifer: Is the mast fuzzy all over or only in the area of the boom reinforcement?
I would suggest using West System Epoxy as it is the most compatable resin I am
aware of  and is probably available at your nearby marine store. If the thinner is
available I would  cut the epoxy at least 25% so as not to add too much weight.
I have used sponge rollers or regular paint brushes to apply it and it goes on real
well. This should seal up the glass fibers and end your fuzzy mast problem. If you
need further info I would be happy to research which # West resin to use but the
waxy laminating resin should wet out the fibers best. For best result you might want
to thin it even further and lightly wet sand between coats for a better finish and seal.
