NP 2001 Diablo Rigging Question

NP 2001 Diablo Rigging Question

Post by walsti.. » Tue, 29 Aug 2000 11:08:06

Hey Now!  Just picked up a new 2001 Diablo 6.7 and am looking for
advice on rigging it.  I have several NP Supersonics and have no
problem rigging them correctly, but the Diablo seems different.  On the
supersonics, with enough downhaul to open the leech to about 2/3 on the
second panel, the batten below the boom comes to about the midpoint of
the mast and the batten above the boom just touches the mast.  However,
the 6.7 Diablo says the luff is to be set at 463...I tried to rig it
first at 460 with zero mast extension...got the pulleys down to within
an inch or so of the mast foot and the sail was loose in the leach, but
all of the battens were at least an inch or so away from the mast.  I
understand the upper battens on an RAF sail are supposed to pull away
and end up directly behind the mast, but I am talking about the 2
battens below the boom as well as the first batten above the boom.  I
am using a NP Free Ride Pro 460 mast.  Something does not seem
right...if I set the mast extension for the extra 3 cm as called for in
the specs, the sail should be downhauled even more, which would pull
the battens even farther away from the mast.  Should I not worry about
where the battens are and just go the the looseness in the upper
panels? Thanks for any advice, Randy

NP 2001 Diablo Rigging Question

Thanks for the advice Marc...I posted my question on that site and will
look forward to what they have to say.  As of now, I feel the sail was
not made correctly as my other Diablo 7.7 rigs fine....maybe the
new "batwing" technology has changed the way the sail rigs??  Hard to
believe that an RAF sail will work correctly with all the battens
pulled off the mast...but, I am no sail designer.
