Windsurfing late June/early July

Post by windsmur » Wed, 15 Feb 2006 07:02:10

I'll be freeing myself from the shackles of curriculum based learning
in mid-June and would like to celebrate by spending a week on a board
and hooked to a sail.  I have a SW voucher and would like to fully
exploit it by traveling to the East Coast (as I am on the West Coast).
Does anyone have information/suggestions of where to go? I am
considering Hatteras and Miami-- how reliable are the winds in these
areas during late June/early July?
I will need a place to rent gear (hopefully an outfit that has gear on
the beach).  I have not learned to water start yet so places that also
offer lessons would be great.  Also, any information on accomodations
and other things to do in the area would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

I would add Cape Cod to your list of possible locations...Kalmus may be
windier than Hatteras at that time of the year.   Though if you want to
keep rigged gear on the beach, it's hard to beat Hatteras.

Does SW go anywhere in the Caribbean?  If I was looking for wind in
late June, early July, not much beats the islands.  July is probably
the best month for steady trades.

Cape Cod can definetely be at its best that time of year.  Inlsand sea
is a shop that is very close to the launch, and windfest is usually
sometime in June, so you can just take out demo gear all day from a
bunch of different companies.

If you make it for Hatteras, Windsurfing Hatteras has a very popular
launch right out their back door, and a ton of rental/ demo gear.

I think Florida would be a poor choice in the summer, comapred with
places further north.

Hope this helps,

Mike

You're making a big decision making mistake.
WestCoast can be sailible 6 out of 7 days with over 20 mph winds.
EastCoast that time of year, mid summer, is going to be maybe 2 days
out of 2 weeks, hot and bug infested.
Do a rethink!  Save your SW ticket for Nov-Feb, when E coast is good,
and no wind on the W coast.

East Coast in June is getting crowded, at least where I windsurf in
Sandy Hook, NJ.  No rentals in northern NJ, either.  Try us in Sep on
your way back home.

Agreed. The east coast is terrible in the summer. October is usually
good...

(Of course, even then we only ride backside ;-))

Thanks for the tips!

I'll probably want to sail Cape Cod or Hatteras... when is the windy
season for these two areas?

Thanks!

I was thinking the same thing.  Bay Area is ideal that time of year,
why leave?

Dude, you're leaving California PEAK season to go to the East Coast in
the OFF-season (i.e. hot and dead)?  Are you F#$KING NUTS?!

If you must leave California, go to the Gorge, SW flies there.  It'll be
honking by then.

By all means, go to the East Coast.  Just don't go there to windsurf in
July.  You won't be able to anyhow.

Unfortunately I no longer live in the wind blessed Bay Area.  I'm four
hours away from the Gorge and I will make weekly pilgrimmages there but
I wanted a week long getaway before I end my five year hiatus from
working full time.  My SW voucher expires in January so I wanted to go
somewhere this summer.  I had thought (apparently erroneously) that
Hatteras would be windy during the summer.
Anyway, thanks for stopping me before I made a mistake.

I agree with your West Coast compadres!  I'd stay home during prime
season.  IMHO, June - August is the summer doldrums around here (North
Carolina).  We get our days, but it's not consistent or reliable
enough to plan a windsurfing trip. If you do come out, best chances
are out at Hatteras and you'll just have to watch and see if you can
catch an afternoon thermal.

For Hatteras the windy times are Spring and early summer when the
thermals kick ***almost every day and again around Thanksgiving. Hot
summers can be quite windless.

If you're going to the East Coast, I'd say Cape Cod is your best bet
for that time period. No rentals on the beach - but Inland Sea is
pretty damn close.

I've totally scored there in June, July, and August.

Use your voucher to fly to oakland, rent an RV, and camp at Sherman
Island.  Keep all your stuff rigged, and sail almost every day.  That's
what I would do.  When you feel like it, you can still hit the coast,
or other bay area spots.  Sherman has a nice playpen that is good for
learning to waterstart, and great instruction by Jason Voss.

Only gotcha is that I wouldn't tent camp there.  The wind really howls
at night and I hear that being in a tent can be pretty uncomfortable.
