slalom,race sail / wave,slalom mast?

Post by Peder Syr » Thu, 22 May 1997 04:00:00

As i recently bought a Up slalom race sail 93/94' I use an epoxy mast. I
was offered a wave/slalom mast 24% carbon.
What I wondered was is that combination competetive?

I have to add the fact that I am a beginner.

Thank you!

Peder:
I'd expect the 24% wave/slalom mast to be a little too soft  (ie not
high enough IMCS stiffness) for the race sail.
I'd suggest you ask to rig your sail on the mast before you purchase
it.
The sail (or the sail bag)  will probably tell you what mast is
preferred for the sail, and the correct MCS or IMCS rating.
Check the label on the bottom of the mast to see if they are
compatible. A difference of 1 IMCS or MCS may not be too bad, but if
there is a major difference between the mast stiffness and the sail's
recommended mast stiffness, it will be very difficult to rig and will
diminish the sails performance quite a bit.
Hope this helps!
You're asking the right kind of questions, spo you won't be a beginner
for long!
