I don't surf (just windsurf). But, there seems to be more surfers
here in Florida than windsurfers from what I have seen. In Ft
Lauderdale, they even have a club for "older" surfers (guys and
gals who used to do it back in the 60's and 70's that are now older
, but still enjoy the sport even on longboards- 9 footers).

There is a strip of beach in Ft Lauderdale just North of Sunrise
Blvd where there is almost always people surfing. I have seen as
few as 3 and as many 30 people at one time out there depending on
the conditions.

There is another spot up near Jupiter (just north of West Palm)
where lots of people frequent as well but I do not remember the
name of that beach. The conditions for surfing at this beach are
typically better than in Ft Lauderdale.

When I have been up in the Daytona Beach and St Augustine area there
are lots of cars driving around with surfboards and surf racks but the
few times I have been, the conditions there were not too great for
surfing. There are plenty of designated areas in those locations for
surfers as well

Definitely.  I'm sure there are many, many more surfers in Florida than
windsurfers. The Space Coast area without a doubt has the greatest
concentration of surfers in the state, and some of the best surf, although
it is possible to surf almost anywhere in Florida except the Keys. I've
been surfing in Florida for about 25 years and sailing for about 13
years.  In fact, I was surfing today in Cocoa Beach near Patrick Air Force
Base.  When I took up windsurfing I was so stoked by it that I kind of
gave up surfing, but the past 2 or 3 years I've been surfing a lot more
again because I find that the two sports complement each other very well.
When it's too windy and blown out to surf it's great for windsurfing and
when the wind is calm, the waves are glassy for surfing.  Of course, in
Florida there are many days when it's both calm and flat so then you need
another backup sport like water skiing.
