This is my first winter of trying to sail in the boston area and I was
just wondering, short of flying to the carribean, where are the best
places to sail (i.e. warmest, most people around) in the winter in the
boston area?  Is lake quannapowitt warmer than the ocean?

Thanks,

Kevin

I rather like Duxbury at the Powder Point Bridge.  Winter winds are
frontal driven so it's not necessary to go all the way to Cape Cod.  If
it's near enought to low tide you can stand which means if you fall you
can clear the sail and waterstart without getting your hands too cold.
It's only 45 minutes from Boston.  It's not likely to be frozen over,
Quannapowitt will.  On a weekend with good winds and warm weather (50
degrees F is about my lower limit) you'll see between one and two dozen
sailors out.

Seabrook. N.H. aka Hampton Harbor is fun at low tide on the winter NW's -
speeeeed sailing in the estuary.

Nahant works in any direction but the usual winter W, WNW and NW are great,
if you are careful.  These are off to sideoff shore winds.  launch at the
south (Nahant) end of the beach.

The water at "Q" will be getting pretty hard soon.  A good ice sailin spot!

The lake freezes thus making it unsailable.  In fact it has ice on it today.
However the ice will disapear & reappear depending on weather.  Given the
right conditions there might be another session or two  possible.

Another place to check out is Castle Island at S.Boston.  It's accessible and a
number of winter sailors go there.

Kevin,
Someone's sailing at Kalmus on good days most of the year. Three years
ago Hyannis Harbor froze over for 4-5 weeks, but not so the last two years.
I used to sail in the 20's, but the frozen lines, deck, etc... allowed my
mind to exert some leverage, and now sail only at or above 30's, and with
sun and wind. Onshore (SW) isn't as frequent in winter. I used to sail in
Scituate, but winter logs, ice, and too little wind fail to attract many!

Oh yeah, I forgot .....Pleasure Bay's a great spot at Castle Island.  You
can sail, in the pool, on NE cw to SW.  Winter NW's don't work well there. =
wind shadow.    You can also sail, across the street, in Dorchester Bay but
you'd be hurtin' if you break anything in a Nor'easter.

There were 6 guys sailing at Pleasure Bay in South Boston today.   We
managed to scratch out a few rides on 5.0 to 5.9's.  Temperature dropped
from 43 to 37F  in about an hour as the wind turned more N and dropped
off....bagged it at 2pm
