Chicago sailing info?

Post by Erik Kulsta » Fri, 12 Jun 1998 04:00:00

Will be visiting Chicago in late June; any advice on where to sail (do
people windsurf in Chicago?), where to rent a board, and any other tips
would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Eric:

Call Jackie at Windward Sports 773.472.6868 and she can fill you in on rental
options.

Best sailing spots are Lake Michigan, launching from Evanston (Greenwood St.
Beach) or Wolf Lake.

We do windsurf here, but you can't count on wind in June - depends on fronts
moving through.

Yah, it's our dirty little secret:  in summertime, the City ain't
Windy that often.  OTOH, 10-15 knots still beats being dry (and it's
quieter than wakeboarding).

Chicago the Windy City has to do with the politicians.  Now if we could somehow
extend air ducts from City Hall to the lakefront, we might have a new
gorge-like windsurfing spot.

As an alternative, Lincoln Park Boat Club has some very challenging fla***er
kayaks and rowing sculls.  Most of the time in the summer that pesky wind is
not a problem for paddlers and rowers.

Better yet, let's flood City Hall.  Or maybe
the atrium in the State of Illinois center -
we could have indoor events!
