Wave Sail Discussion (try again)

Post by Adam Za » Thu, 05 Aug 1993 00:22:56

: Lets try discussing wave sails, again.

[stuff deleted]

: I want a sail with ALOT of range and I want RAF for full luffability.  If I
: want cambers, I'll sail my race sails.  My 5.1 and 5.6 work fine with my
: wave boards at 3rd and Rio Vista as long as I'm careful jibing.  I just
: can't do as much "playing" in the swells.  All 3 I mention above are
: supposed to have alot of range and the AirFoils and Sailworks wave sails
: are supposidly able to be tuned for the conditions (nice feature).

: Any comments, ideas, other?

There were some other replies along this line but, the Hurricane sails
are great for me. I used to live in Oregon and sailed the Gorge. These
are very popular up there. They are, however, more of a Wave/Slalom
shape. I have taken them to Hawaii twice during the Summer. They
worked great there too. The waves are not as big as in the Winter, so
I don't know for a fact that they will work in really big surf. BTW,
there are many sailors in Hawaii that sail Simmer. Being Summer, there
were a great many people sailing on Neil Pryde World Cup Slaloms too!

But back to the Hurricanes. I find them to be pretty powerful through
a pretty wide wind range. I have a 3.7, 4.2, 4.7, 5.2, 5.8. Yeah, I
know that these are .5 meter increments, but I find that I can flatten or
make the sail more full to extend the range. I have not tried the half
batten set up someone else mentioned, but my fully battened sails can
be made to luff, if only just a wee bit. :-)

I saw Robbie sailing a decent sized race sail (5.5 or 6.0) on days the
rest of us mere mortals were on 3's and 4's on a big day in April.  He looked
like a mosquito darting in and out of the huge surf.  Of course he wasn't doing
any tricks - just sailing fast in very difficult conditions...

My read on "wave/slalom" is that the sail can be made to luff, but it has the
feel of a slalom sail.  Correct?  For this reason I'd classify the Windwing
MP49s (or is it 41s?) as wave/slalom.  The WW's look well built, sail very
well (I've sailed them twice in the Gorge), but are still a compromise from
a true wave sail - the only one I've sailed is the Gaastra Heat.

I dont know. Compare for north the Zeta and the Vertigo, and for gaastra the
Heat wave and the MV5... They are very similar, I'd say the difference is that
the Wave model is a tad flatter, but is much more reinforced (and thus costs
$100 more...), thus aimed at smaller waves just for the amount of punishment
they can stand...

The Vertigo or MV5 definitely dont have the feel of a slalom sail!

Besides, both cannot "luff" (full battened sails), they just go flat when
depowered, which is in my opinion even better than luffing, since it keeps a
rigid foil which does not wobble in the wind...
