Jalama info requested

Post by Jeremy Schofie » Sat, 22 Jun 1991 04:05:34

I want to plan some trips to Jalama this summer.  If anyone has been
there, maybe you could answer some of my "trip-planning" questions.

- how do you make camp-site reservations and what is the cost ?

- How primitive is the place ?  (ie, showers ?, bathrooms ?)

- is there a food shop close by, or do you need to bring ALL food supplies ?

- what's the typical summer wind ?

- how warm is it ?  is a spring suit the call ?

Thanks in advance

Jeremy

*** You can't make reservations, it is 1st come, 1st serve.  On the busy
weekends, don't expect to show up Friday and get a campsite.  The next
nearest camping seems to be at Lompoc, which is a 30 min drive away!

*** It is generally nice camping.  They have clean restrooms, but the
showers are rather primitive (although I haven't gone there for a year,
it may be better now).  Some of the sites are quite privite, others are
a zoo.  However, even with all the windbreak hedges, bushes, and trees,
the wind can blow so hard in the evenings that camping without a
motorhome can be a ***!  We once had to wait until 10:00pm before I
could light my Coleman stove!

*** There is a small store there that has ice and some supplies.  They
also sell burgers, etc.  However, you will have to go to Lompoc or Snta
Barbara for serious supplies.

*** May and June are the windiest months, and 3.7-3.0 days are not
uncommon.  However, I have been told that the chances of good wind are
reasonable through August.

*** The water is standard Northern Pacific 50-57 deg F.  You'll be kind
of chilly in a spring suit.

Have fun!  I really think Jalama is a super neat place.  While it can be
rather gnarly, it also has very easy days as well.  I guess the
uncertainty adds to the level of energy and excitment.  You definitely
won't feel crowded sailing, and the people I met there were very
friendly.

My only recommendation is to be sure you have an extra wave mast, booms,
and any other critical components, as it is a long way to get
replacements (Santa Barbara?).

Give us a trip report when you return!
