Driving to Dewey question

Post by MTVNewsG » Wed, 23 Aug 2000 04:00:00

I'm thinking about driving to Dewey Beach, and am trying to get an idea of the
time from the Delaware Memorial Bridges (which I'm well familiar with from the
Hatteras run).

Any experienced estimates on hours, or roads to take (when to get off 13)?

I was recently down that route, and it took a little less than 2 hours
(late in the evening with no traffic).
I used the toll road around Dover and Milford (cost about $1.00 each I
think) and it was a real easy trip.
Just follow the signs and you will get off Rt. 113 onto Rt. 1 just
past Milford at the end of the little toll road. Then it's a straight
shot down into Dewey.
You get off Rt 13 just before the visitors center near Smyrna onto the
Rt. 1 (Toll road), which leads you onto Rt.113 and  then onto the
Milford bypass (also toll and Rt. 1) which puts you on Rt. 1 heading
to Dewey Beach.
regards, roger

Driving to Dewey question

Hi Michael,
A group of us from CT make several Dewey Beach pilgrimages for long
weekends in spring and fall (since we can't take whole weeks off for
Hatteras). My educated guess for the time from the DMB to Dewey is 2
hours (but that can be longer or shorter due to traffic and the time of
day). We usually leave at 2 AM and arrive before 8 AM. But I've gone on
a Friday afternoon twice and had the traffic in northern Delaware add an
extra 45 min.
You'll be taking Rt 13 (combo with Rt 40), then Rt 1/Rt 13 combo, then
the Rt 1/Rt 113 combo (Rt 13 goes off as if to Hatteras), and then just
Rt 1 south of Milford into Dewey. The route is well marked with signs.
Shortly after you get off the bridge, you can exit from I-295 onto Rt.
13. If you miss that exit for some reason, keep going onto I-495 until
exit 4 which exits onto Rt 1. Actually just about any exit along there,
as long as you head south and/or east will get you to Rt 13 and Rt 1.
The Rt 13 exit is a big wide strip thru shopping malls etc, but it
usually moves along, is a bit shorter, and offers the opportunity for
pit stops. The exit 4 way has often been slower due to high volume
highway traffic. In either case, the new section of road on Rt 1 is
open, and will be a $1 toll, and there will be another $1 toll further
south around Dover. At Dover, keep heading for the Beach, on the Rt 1/Rt
113 road, and then on Rt 1 alone after Milford. It is clearly marked (at
least to me after driving all night...).
  Enjoy Dewey!
Ellen

Dewey Beach is fun but Lakes Bay is closer and windier with no jelly fish or
weeds ... Although today it's not exactly happening.

Have fun in Dewey or more fun at Lakes Bay

But if he wasn't specifically interested in going to  Hatteras there a quite a
few good wind stops a lot closer for him than your $business$ interest in  Lakes
Bay.

Now Ben

I posted that "tongue in cheek" but just check the iwindsurf.com data and
you'll see that Lakes Bay is more consistently windy than Dewey or most any
other place in the mid atlantic area.

My store doesn't make it windy...it is just a fact.

Thank you all for your thoughts.  I'm going to go to Dewey if I do this trip at
all.

Mark (it is Mark, right?),

I don't dispute that Lakes Bay is an excellent wind spot but your always
plugging with unasked for info.  Why not try to answer the person's question
before the plug. Like when someone asks for a spot around NYC you could say

"Hecksher and Sandy Hook are two great spots."  Then you could plug and say,
"Well, if you don't mind driving an extra 100 miles why not come down to Lakes
Bay for the best wind in the Universe and babes that just don't quit," or
something like that and offer to throw in a few *** chips if it skunks.
