Lake Simcoe & Lake Ontario Report - Still Ice Sailing!!

Post by Joey Alber » Sun, 06 Apr 1997 04:00:00

The plan for today (April 5) was to head down to Frenchman's Bay (Lake
Ontario about 1/2 hour east of Toronto).  But the winds didn't come up
as expected and the temperature made it only to 55-60 degrees.

Instead, we headed north of Toronto to Willow Beach on Lake Simcoe and
continued our ice sailing season on the Snowfers.  The lake is still
covered with 1 foot of ice (soft/black ice).  It now seems possible that
we might be able to ice sail for another week if the temperatures drop
this week.  If anyone in Toronto is interested in coming out (in the
nice warm spring conditions), E-mail me and I'll keep you posted on the
possibilities for next week.  Charles will let you demo a board, if you
haven't tried a Snowfer yet.

For tomorrow, the forecast is for 25mph winds from the south and
temperatures of 65 degrees.  We're all hoping to make it to Frenchman's
bay or Cherry Beach (downtown Toronto) for the first 'open water
sailing' of the year (at least for me).

Did anyone get out on the water in Southern Ontario Sunday?

The water was cold, that is if you could get in where the ice is out..
but the wind was warm.

Got out Saturday.  Solid 15-20 Kts east at Cherry Beach.  Air temperature
8 degrees C.  Water temperature ??.

Still nice to be out though.

I was all set and ready to go in Kingston but it never picked up as it said it
would.  Well, actually that's not true, it picked up to the 25knts or so around
dusk.  I wasn't about to wade through the icebergs in pitch-black to get to sail in
2-3deg water. Maybe soon though!

The ice hasn't cleared away yet from Emily St, Patterson or Everett Pt.

Hi Brent.  Yup, I went out at Cherry Beach, Toronto as well as about 10
others. In Toronto, the temperature was 72F.  Over the water I'd say it
was about 65.  We all sailed course boards with 7.0 to 7.5 (in my case
an Equipe since I had no intentions of being in the water except to get
on and off the board).

I was concerned the winds might not touch down over Lake Ontario, and
for the most part this is what happened.  Yet, just north of us on shore
the winds were blowing 20 knots.  I understand that the phenominon is
common when hot south winds come across the cold lake. Presumably the
cold air hovering over the water keeps the winds from touching down
until they reach warmer land.  But we had occassional gusts, a few which
lasted anywhere from 5 - 15 minutes.

This weekend it looks like ice-sailing again on Lake Simcoe.  Come on up
and give it a a last try (this will be the last till next year I'm
sure). We'll either be at Keswick or Willow Beach.  Bring your rig (4.0
- 6.0) and helmet and leave Charles an e-mail at www.snowfer.com to let
him know you want to try a demo board this weekend.

THREE WEEKS AND COUNTING TO HATTERAS!!!!
