I've got a 1999 F2 Ride 277 which I absolutely love.

I understand that the 277 is being replaced by the Ride 274.  A couple
salesmen from some windsurfing shops have told me that the 274 is a lot more
fun than the 277.  It's looser and livelier.

I'm skeptical.

In looking at the specs for the new 274, I notice that it ships with a
"convertible" fin ... one that is swept back.  The old 277, however, shipped
with a slalom fin.  My guess is that the better "feel" of the new board
might be do in large part to the fin it ships with.  I'm thinking I could
mimic the feel of the 274 simply by putting a "convertible" fin on my old
277.

Anybody have any first hand experience with both boards?  Should I upgrade
to the 274, or just buy another fin for my old 277?

I bought the 274 a short while ago. It seems to have been slightly
retuned to handle chop better and be a bit more lively in return for a
slight loss of straight ahead speed. The best way to look at it is that
it's been inched a bit towards the Mistral Flow in terms of the rails
etc i.e. no great changes...I'd hold on to your 277. btw I love the
Ride 274...

Having sailed the 277 a lot and the 274 a little, I'd say the differences are
extremely minor, and frankly I find the 277 to be more enjoyable, particularly
in the turns.   If you want to tweak the performance of your 277, experiment
with another fin.  Don't replace your board.
