Will the sun damage a Carbon Epoxy F2...

Post by kpea.. » Tue, 14 Jul 1992 20:39:12

I have an F2 Lightning Carbon Epoxy board which spends a lot of time
sitting on my roof rack out in the hot summer sun.  What I want to
know is whether or not the heat from the sun or the uv rays will
eventually damage the board???

Thanks in advance

Epoxy is very vulnerable to UV damage.  If you want your boards to last and
stay looking new, keep them in canvas bags whenever you aren't sailing.
Mine are on my car roof all the time but in canvas bags (light tan).  Every-
one is always amazed how good my boards look.  Footstraps suffer alot from
UV damage too.  The bag will also protect the board from bugs, grit and flying
stones.  Just use light colored canvas so the board won't overheat and suffer
delamination.

Sun degrades many materials and your board is one of them.
Get a cover ASAP. When not in use keep your board in the shade. The same
should be for masts. Also if your board starts cooking the gases in the
styrene may expand enough to delaminate your board and thats bad news.

Although the gases may not expand until 30degreeC, UV will affect the
board regardless.

I have been storing my board on the roof of my car for the past couple of
years with no apparent damage but this doesn't mean that there isn't any
stress put on the seam. My board is a F2 Sunset Slalom made of Carbon Epoxy.

If I had an easier place than the ba***t to store my board, I would
probably take it off when it is not windy....it wouldn't be on the roof too
often lately.
