Fin size for 7.7 on Techno 273?

Fin size for 7.7 on Techno 273?

Post by jakestatha » Thu, 20 Apr 2000 04:00:00

I am considering buying a Diablo 7.7 to use with my Bic Techno 273, and
was wondering whether the stock 40cm fin supplied with the board might
be too small.

This fin/board combination works very well with a Supersonic 7.4, but
the Supersonic will need replacing soon and the board feels like it
could easily handle a bigger sail.

Any suggestions? Also, where can I find a good selection of Trimbox
fins?

I weigh 65kg and don't race.

Fin size for 7.7 on Techno 273?

Post by Will Harpe » Thu, 20 Apr 2000 04:00:00

Congrats on the Techno 273, I think the most fun, versatile and user
friendly board in it's class.  Huge improvement in fun and handling over
the 283, though it needs a bit more wind to get going (and stay going,
and go upwind, etc).  Nice job.

Since the True Ames are pretty much unavailable, try a Curtis CR-7 44
(if they make it that big) or a CR-15 46.

If your Supersonic is wearing out already, why another NP sail?  Sailed
the Diablo 7.2 last week and it's a nice sail, good top end, very smooth
and nice looking,  but my Retro 7.0 (compared back to back) had more
power and felt like a smaller, more fun (actually jumpable) sail.  If
you read Roger Jackson's stuff on early planing you have to like what he
says about the Retro, AND windsurf mag gave it a substantially better
review.  Do a Deja search on NP durability and I think the Sailworks
proves itself worth the extra $$.  Also check out Windsport (Canada)'s
review of the Retro 7.5, IMHO it's a more powerful, more fun, and better
built sail than the Diablo.  Not sure of the price difference, but it's
probably worth it.  Oh yeah, did I mention the Retro is way easier to
rig/de-rig?  Well it is.  Shamelessly plugging Sailworks for no personal
gain whatsoever, just in this case I've sailed both, and one is CLEARLY
better IMHO.  Whoa, too much coffee..... gotta go.

I'm going to heartily agree with Will on the sail information here. I
had an 8.1 Supersonic and a 7.5 Retro last year, and found I was getting
better low end with the Retro in the same conditions. Not to mention the
huge range of each Retro, improved ability to tune the sail on the
water, ease of rigging/derigging, and more durable construction. I
became a believer late last summer, and have now switched over to Retros
from 9.0 to 5.5 and am one happy camper/sailor.

Fin size for 7.7 on Techno 273?

I think the 40cm fin on the board OK for 7.7 if your not trying to
point too much and if you are powered up, but you could look at the
FINWORKS WING 440.

The DIABLO RIPS.  Good choice.  Its one of the smoothest fastest sails
I have ever used.  I would put it up against a retro any day in any and
all categories. The sail has limitless top end, the more wind you throw
at it the faster you go.  I have the 7.2 and I love it.  Everyone who
trys my 7.2 ends up buying one.  If you are in California, let me know
and I will find you a demo to try.  The 7.7 is unique because it still
rigs on a 460/25 mast.

Fin size for 7.7 on Techno 273?

Thanks for the advice. I'll have to check out the Retro, although I
sail in Hong Kong and am not sure whether they're sold here. Everyone
pretty much uses Neil Pryde and Gaastra by default here.

I agree with Will that the Techno is a terrific board. Coming from a
103-litre slalom board, I've found the 273 a great compromise between
early planing and higher-wind control. In light air, it offers the same
feeling of being big, wide and ready to plane in the slightest puff
that you get with the new ultra-wide light-wind boards, but overpowered
it's very fast, controllable and light underfoot. Almost feels like my
103-litre Screamer II.

I thoroughly recommend it, at least to anyone of my weight (65kg).

Jake,

Let me try it also. 90 kg...do you think the french boards can resist
such a load?

With such a board, our domination of the lighter wind days will be
jeopardized.
Fran and I will have to take dramatic measures for dramatic situations.
Our 54cm fins will be coming ever so close...beware, the Swiss duo
doesn't take prisonners!

Nice to see you on the NG.
