Baja - Which location?

Baja - Which location?

Post by Duncan Wallac » Sun, 10 Nov 1996 04:00:00

I am considering going to east Baja this winter with my family (non-sailing
wife and 1 yr. old son).  I have been considering three options,

1. stay at a friend's condo. in La Paz and use Captain Kirk's services.

2. Stay at Bill's Baja Adventures in Buena Vista.  The rates seem pretty
good.

3.  Vela Baja in Los Barriles

I am a low end intermediate, confident high wind sailor but can't jibe.
East Baja would probably suit me better than waves on the west side.

My wife is content to be on a clean warm beach with some shopping nearby.
Budget is definitely a big issue.  Is Baja OK for my son?  Do many families
vacation there?  Are their any baby-sitting services available?  Any
feedback about which service to use would be helpful.

I assume taking my own gear and renting a car would be too much of a
hassle.  I am planning on staying a week.  I have heard that Baja can go a
few days straight without wind.  Is seven days long enough?  I would be
content with three days of good quality wind.

I have heard La Paz is a beautiful, clean, low crime city.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

None of the options would really be good for your son and wife.  No
matter what the adverti***ts say, Baja is still a frontier and does
not have the sanitation and living conditions of more places like the US
or Canada.

The beaches down there are mostly rocky, have lots of sea urchins
(spiney little bastards) and no flush toilets.  If someone gets sick or
hurt you can be in a lot of trouble since the medical facilities are not
up to US/Canadian standards.

You can probably get air fare, lodging and a rental car cheaper in Maui
than the Baja trip would cost if you stay at a Baja resort.  Rental cars
in Baja are unreasonably expensive and are not usually an option.

The "can't jibe" factor makes Kirk's place best for you.  You can stay in
shallow sandy water for miles, slightly downwind of the launch.
La Paz is also the shopping scene.  I dunno about child care...

Bill's and Vela get you out into deep water immeadiately, but you sail
where you sleep and eat - that's real nice too.

Baja is great for kids.  Yes families do it.
Go for it.

Stay in Los Barrilles if you bringing wife and son there will be much more
for them to do than at La Ventana at C Kirks.  I recommend Vela I know
their staff very well and they are excellent service oriented
proffesionals who'll make your stay fun for you and your spouse.  Tom

Howdy fellow Windsurfers,

I just picked up a copy of the Nov/Dec 96 issue of "Longboard" magazine.
This issue focuses on longboard design and construction, and has some
great articles on history of board and fin design, etc.   It's specific to
surfing, but hey, that's our roots! Highly recommend grabbing a copy.

That may be true Tom but remember how much wind there was last year.  I
know you're a big guy and need a lot more wind than us skinny runts but
even then, how much did it blow in Barriles?

I'll grant that La Ventana is primitive compared to Barriles.  Depends on
how accustomed the wife and kids are to roughing it.

I stayed 8 days and had 4 good wind days. My next trip will be for 2
weeks (naturally La Ventana).
