Mast and base sizes, are they all alike?

Mast and base sizes, are they all alike?

Post by John Snyde » Tue, 16 May 2000 04:00:00

I broke my O'Brien mast last year and had a spare [Ampro?] the foot went
in but got stuck.  Are O'Brien standard sizes or do I need a new
base/foot?  Will any other brand fit an O'Brien board.  I know I have to
get another board, but for now...
thanks

Most newer gear is pretty much compatable but not all. For example some of the
Neil Pryde feet that look identical to the Chinook feet are just larger and
will not fit into the Chinook bases without some slight mods. You'd swear
through that with some elbow grease you could make it fit. You could but you'd
probably never get it back out.

Generally though the masts are about the same diameter with the exception of
the skinnies. With older gear though (more than 7 years old?) the masts were a
little different. Many were larger in diameter at the top as compared to the
masts of today.

It may nto be a bad idea to get a newer base/foot, especially if you have the
original universal joint.
