The fen (fenn? fenne?).  They kept talking about it being the cause of
the lousy skiing in Austria when I was over there scratching for snow
one winter.  It's some warm wind that blows out of the south.  Probably
makes for good sailing somewhere.  JG

Ok, if you want a serious wind list,
you should verify the info just a little bit.

Just because somebody writes something, it doesn't mean it's true.
(this is a general problem with the net and applies to this mssg too ;-)
One easy way would be that at least 2 people name the same wind.

for instance:

Chubasco        hmmm, maybe it's ok, but it just means something
                like rainfall/rainstorm in Spanish...

Dusenwind       how can you expect a Greek/Turkish wind to have
a German name ? Come on ! This is probably the "Meltemi"

Vento           completely wrong. It's "Peler"

The following is an addition.  All these winds come straight from the
American Meteorological Society official glossary of meteorology.

n'aschi - (also spelled nashi)  The Arabic name for a northeasterly wind
which occurs in winter on the Iranian coast of the Persian Gulf.

autan - A strong southeast wind in south-central France, especially in
gascony and the upper Garonne River.  Near the pyrennees the autan is
very turbulent.  At Toulouse its average speed is 30 mph with gusts of 45
to 50 mph!

avre - Another French wind.

avalanche wind - The rush of air produced in front of an avalanche
(snowboard sailing anyone??).

brickfielder - a squally northerly or northwesteryly win in souther
Australia.

harmattan - A dry dusty E-NE wind wich blows in West Africa espceially
from late November until mid-March.

helm wind - A strong cold northeasterly wind blowing down intothe Eden
valley from the western slope of the Crossfell Range in northern England.

knik wind - local name for a strong southeast wind in the vicinity of
Palmer in the mattanuska valley of Alaska.

levante - The Spanish and most widely used term for an E or NE wind
occurring along the oast and inland from souther France to the Straits of
Gibralter.

That's all I have time for now.  There are plenty more in this book.
Maybe I'll have time to add some more.

I think you guys might be forgetting one of the most famous, and
hard-working winds in the world... the "Levante", resulting from the
clockwise rotation of a high pressure system over Spain, combined with an
anti-clockwise rotating low over Northern Africa.

This is the baby that powers up Tarifa.

15 bonus points for the name of other wind which bleses Tarifa....  Yes
indeed, 'tis the "Feneante"  Chances are that is far from the correct
spelling, but it blows in the other direction and is not the strong
one...

Tramontane (like the Mistral in south of France except it's a NW orientation)
Levante and Ponante (at Tarifa, of course)
Libeccio (west orientation in Corsica)

Just one more that I can add to this list:

Bise:   the strong north-easterly that blows in Switzerland across Lac Leman
Geneva. Usually blows the same time as the Mistral in the south of France.
