Dog name wanted from names of Wind!

Post by Gavin Bayli » Tue, 20 Feb 1996 04:00:00

This maybe the second posting of this thread, so apologies if it is..
We are getting a Newfoundland puppy, for those of you who don't know,
this dog is only realy happy in water (it has webbed feet), they have a
natural instinct to retrieve from the water, when fully grown they are
around 150-170lbs, very majestic, regal etc and slobber all over the
place....dirty, smelly etc
We have been windsurfing for nigh on 15 years, live on the south coast
of England with the sea on our backdoor so the dog is a natural
extension to our family, so to the purpose of the thread....we need a
name that is not too corny, the kids like Maui, but that's pretty
obvious. Are there any names of local winds or islands that might fit
the bill, the dogs a *** so Bob won't do....for those of you expecting
kids you might get some tips from this posting as well..,our children
have middle names of Jenna and Natalie!

Dog name wanted from names of Wind!

Gavin --
There was a thread here last winter gathering wind names to be used in
naming a suite of computers. Scores, maybe even hundreds, of names cropped
up. Maybe yuo can get that collector's attention here.
Chinook (a Rocky Mountain wind in the USA) would sound good to you and me,
but dogs do not like names beginning in an "s" sound. They listen and
respond primarily to the first syllable of their name (and many
commands), and do better if that syllable has a harder sound. They
especially like "d" and "b" and "g" sounds.

That said, we ignored it and named our Leonburger "Thunder". When she's
concerned about something, the name is very appropriate. If lions could
bark, they'd sound like Leonburgers. Appropo, because Leos look like lions
with jet-black faces. Leos were developed from Newfies, Great Pyrennes,
and Saints a century and a half ago, and are beginning to join, sometimes
replace, Newfies as water rescue dogs in some areas. They have in some
cases required NO TRAINING to rescue even strangers in trouble in water.

Good luck with your Newfie. Our dog's personality stems strongly from
their Newfie ***, and that's good. They're both sweetheats.

How about Gail or maybe Viento (the spanish word for wind). I personally
named my dog after a Star Trek character, DAX, The worm bellied symbiant.
Good luck.

I don't know if you like Spanish names but we named one of our dog's
puppies "Racha".  Racha is a little used spanish word and means "gust of
wind".  There is also another meaning: "buena racha" means "stroke of good
luck" and "mala racha" means "stroke of bad luck".  Unfortunately our
Racha turned out to have a "mala racha" as the people who adopted him get
out too much and he was killed by a car.
good luck

Some obscure ones for you:  MWERA (Chichewa for SE trade wind blowing
over Lake Malawi, Central Africa); MPOTO (good name for a dog?) -
unpredictable northerly wind, same language, same lake.  BORA (offshore
winter wind that blows over the northern Adriatic Sea).

Sorry if this thread has been running for years, I only just happened
across the group.
