or you weigh less than 200 pounds or depend on stormfronts for "real" wind or ...

(I wouldn't own a 3.5 or less in Maui or S.F. Baja...)

Unless your one of the lucky ones, you do rely on storm fronts and I don't
regard this as second rate wind!
Also because you don't weigh 200lbs you need that 3.5

Makes much more sense.  It seems like 10% is good if you have steady winds,
maybe 15% or more if you sail mostly storms.

Buy one good sail that works well overpowered.  Then use your
husband's if the wind changes.

Hi
The percentage makes logical sense.
IMHO, I usually just pick what I think is the right
size sail, then if the wind picks up, I usually will
sail 'till I quite overpowered, then I'll rig a full
meter smaller. I really hate to spend much TIME de-rigging
then rigging. I was burned one time rigging in half meter
increments and spent the whole day rigging instead of sailing.

Clearly this is the way to go though to be pedantic you need to say whether
changing up or down because 15% of 7.5 is more than 15% of 6.5. In fact I
think even bigger percentage differerces are right for large sails because you
can sail a big board on flat water more overpowered - just the reverse of the
1 metre theory. I have a Tiga 285 which I only sail with a 7.2. When this
gets uncomfortable I'm happy (and and happier :-) ) using a 5.7 on my Gecko
265. My 2 smallest sails are a 3.5 and 3.9 bacause you can tolerate being
overpowered less in these conditions.  I wouldn't bother rigging up from a
3.5 to a 3.9 though - I'd go straight to a 4.5.  But to get the benefit from
this strategy you need enough booms and masts to have 2 complete rigs (plus
a van to carry all your kit all around in!)
