HELP: Sail Repair - and extender wanted

Post by Andy Wolfsbe » Wed, 15 Jul 1992 05:26:29

Whoooo Boy, a double post in 1

1)  I'm soliciting advice on home sail repair.  We have a 3 to 4
in rip in a sail and are trying to figure out how to fix it.
Any advice on materials and technique will be much appreciated.

2) I'm still looking for a cheap used mast extender.  It's for
our beginner board and rig so it doesn't have to be anything
fancy.  Check those boxes of used (not used), old equipment.

Thanks in advance
Andy

Last spring I fell on one of my favorite sails when I blew a jibe and put
my harness hook through it.  It was a long (about 18") single tear.  I
thought about sending it away to be patched, but decided I would try to
fix it myself.

I bought a roll of clear packing tape (I think it is made of mylar.  Anyone
know for sure?) about 2" wide.  First, I scotch taped the tear little bit at
a time on one side to hold it together, and then put a long strip of the
packing tape on the other side.  I then removed the scotch tape, and put
another long strip of packing tape on the other side being careful not to
trap any air bubbles.  That's all it took!

The sail is almost as good as new and the repair is hardly noticeable.  I
have sailed it several times since then and the repair is holding up well.
Even if the tape deteriorates over time, it is easy (and cheap!) to replace.
