was testing his new wave sails - Cisco (F. Goya) and a few others had them
out at Hookipa the eve before in fairly light conditions (high surf
advisory but light winds). I could see from the low light angle that the
Ezzy sail looked "alive" - as they pumped up to punch out thru the surf line
the sail shimmered in the bluish gold light. This e***d me and I thought
WOW! something new in sails - I was sailing Sailworks Revos (new) at the
time with an 8'3" Angulo egg (full on wave - and by the way, why is the
Angulo brand left out of so many mags [other than photos]?? Ed is/was/is
hard working ex-golf fanatic who promised to return his talents to where
they belong - this board of his that I had for the month was beyond
discription - it did nothin' wrong and most things very well - so why are
they not in the mags - Ed's religious but hey, cast your pearls before
swine!) ANYWHOOO - back to the NR - I feel that if you are a pro/expert you
can't live without these sails - they feel alive! I also have Hot wave sails
and they feels dead/limp. These new gendre of sail (i assume there are
others than those designed by Nils) require you to feed the booms a little
forward, breath like deamons when the leech is tensioned properly and can be
overdownhauled relative to slalom sails - they must go on a 24 or 26 mast -
I use tidal waves - and flip faser in the jibe than an obedient whatever.
So - if you are the kind of person who goes on a tack - slides into
the shallows - drags the gear up - runs for a stick - retensions the
downhaul - has a mastbox far back near the tail on a fairly modern pref
wave board - then these sails are GREAT - I have sixty+ powered hours on
east-coast breaks on the 4.7 - the stitching in the tack let go but
otherwise the constrution seems fine. The 4.0 is a real 4.0 that is it doesn'
t feel like a 3.6 (gutless) nor like a 4.5 (easily overpowered) I guess that
what I am saying is that when rigged properly, they have a light powerful
feeling with a wicked wind range! NP sent mine in August of '93... and
before I ran into these NP NR's, I WAS NOT a Neil Pryde fan - partially
because of the needless equip. destruction in one of their videos - Maui has
enough hi-tec garbage and does not need extra created solely for "
sensationalism!
