Spinouts--HELP!!

     HELP!!

     I have a serious problem with spinout.  I have a '91 Bic Rock (9'8'', 135
liters) and have just started using my  footstraps.  When I get in the straps
and really start moving I frequently experience spinout.  I am using the stock
12'' pointer fin which has had several encounters with the sand bar at Canadian
Hole.  This has happened with sails from 7.3 to 4.4.  I weigh about 190 lbs.  Is
it my technique or my fin?  If it is my fin what type/size/area fin should I
look at buying?  I normally sail in light wind (6.6 - 7.5) but occasionally in
heavier wind (down to a 5.0).  I would prefer to buy only one fin.  Also, please
suggest any technique changes that might prevent spinouts.  I greatly appreciate
any advice!

                                Thanks,
                                 Mike

Before looking for a new fin, make sure that your current one is sanded
smooth and symmetrical (as you say you've had a coupla run-ins with
sandbars).  Any large nicks or gouges (sp?) should be filled and sanded
smooth.  Rough spots on the fin will cause the flow to separate sooner and
thus you'll spin out.

Also, you may be pushing too hard with your back foot or pointing too high
into the wind, or both.  Straighten out that front leg and apply pressure
with it, so as not to load the fin too much.

Cheers,

Spinouts--HELP!!

        Spinout Dude,
I suffered from the same problem when I locked into my first shortboard: your sheeting
in too much and not generating adequate lift, your just going fast and putting side forces on your rig  resulting in funny dynamics and instability.  Try bringing you aft hand forward which will sheet you out automatically.  Also, pushing down on the leeward rail for steerage puts you slightly off the wind and you will stay powered up without the tendancy to overtrim.  Good luck.

If in doubt, both feet out.  In a spin, both feet in!!!
Welcome to shortboarding.  If it ain't short, I don't want it.

Gee nobody has said anything about the first thing you should check.

Make sure that the fin is not loose in the box.  Even the slightest
looseness can cause the fin to work poorly and spinout.

I presume you're using harness lines.  It's very important to get your
weight into the harness lines and not push with your feet.  This is
especially true when you get any air going over chop, when a fin is most
susceptible to cavitation or "spin-out".  Being "light on your feet" will
also help you recover from spinouts (yanking both feet back is difficult if
you've got your weight on them).  As for the fin, I recommend going to a
local reputable shop, show them what you've got, and get their
recommendations.
