Fiberglass Repair of Fin Box

Fiberglass Repair of Fin Box

Post by Lynch James » Sat, 17 Nov 1990 14:30:38

I'm not sure if this got through the first time. Sorry if it's a repeat.
I recently blew out my fin box on a submerged log and I am in the process
of finding the appropriate materials for the repair. My friend who is
teaching me what to do recommended getting the following materials.

Chinook Finbox - Already purchased
S glass or E glass fiberglass cloth : Need help finding this.
Epoxy Resin: Not exactly what type to get.
Microballoons: Will talcum powder work?

The main problem I am having trouble with is the cloth. Is it worth
getting the S glass or E glass or would the WalMart variety fiberglass
cloth suffice? Any information on what to do would be appreciated. I
have a 10' Islander (Stevie B) made of Clark Foam.

I believe you are working on a (polyester) fiberglass board rather than
an epoxy board.  Epoxy resin will work on polyester resin (I think) but
it costs at least twice as much, so why not go with polyester fiberglass?

Microballoons are used for lightweighting a repair.  In the case of a
finbox, you may not want to sacrifice strength for less weight.  Mixing
shredded cloth (not the weaved type) in with the resin will add a lot of
  strength.

I'm not sure about the 'S' or 'E' glass.  I have always used whatever I
  could find conveniently.

Oops, I didn't read the last line.  My previous post assumed a "glass"
  board.  Oh well, good luck.

Montery Bay Fiberglass in Santa Cruz, CA does a booming mail order
business in fiberglass supplies.  They are honest, quick, and laid back
about helping people fix their board dings, etc...

Give them a call ... (408) 476-7464

I've learned a lot from them.

Epoxy & polyester doesn't stick well with each other, it could delaminate.
Epoxy is much stronger and (most important for finboxes) impact-resistant than
polyester, well worth the price.
