Seam splitting on BIC Vivace 290

Seam splitting on BIC Vivace 290

Post by Mike Blad » Tue, 16 Jul 1996 04:00:00

I bought a new 1996 BIC Vivace 290 a month ago and have only sailed on it
4 times.  The seam near the front of the board is starting to pull apart
letting water in the board.  It looks as if I dinged the board with the
boom near the seam when I got yanked last time out and that seems to have
been the cause of the problem.  I am a little surprised at how easily the
seam has split.  What is the experience of other BIC owners?

Have owned many bic boards and have had only 2 incidents as follows:
92' E-rock seam split 4" after flying of the roof rack at 55+ mph
92' Astro Rock seam split slightly after the mast cracked the nose
Both were professionally repaired for around $50.

Our '95 Saxo 265 have had the foot pads peel.

These events were in my beginning days of sailing, no board problems since but if
you want to talk about broken booms, harness lines, battens, masts....

I've not had a problem with the three BICs I have owned, but this certainly
sounds odd.  I would approach the vendor and ask about warranty coverage !
Nothing to lose ...

Go see your windsurf dealer who sold you the board ASAP to get this taken
care of!!  This is not supposed to happen on a board this new with only 4
days worth of sailing on it.

This can happen whether your board is brand new or old. The impact of the
boom front on the board can be quite strong (like when getting catapulted).
This happened to my Astro Rock (RACEtech) while my girlfriend was learning
to beachstart with strong wind. Also, the nose is possibly the weakest part
of your board (it's thin, plus the Vivace is a moderate no-nose). Moreover,
when it happens you usually don't notice it because you are falling or
already in the water...
However, given that the board is new, bringing it to your dealer will
probably solve the problem, knowing BIC's good quality customer support.

If BIC dosen't take care of it, store board nose down to drain
water (can stick paper towel in crack as a wick). Marine tex
the area and if at the extreme tip glue on a nose guard.  That
worked for me when my son did a nose-job on an A-ROCK a few years
back.
