Help: Fin box repair for '91 Astro Rock

Post by Daniel Thomas Co » Tue, 22 Oct 1996 04:00:00

Can anyone give me some suggestions on how to repair a fin
box for a '91 Astro Rock?  The damage was done while sailing.
I pushed too hard off of the fin and heard a sharp crack.
The fin was bent about 15 degrees and the metal box was
bent and broke into the skin of the board.  How is this box
attached to the board?  I can't find any screws, unless they
are under the grey end caps.

On another note, has anyone sailed the HiFly 275 PX and would
comment on it?

Thanks in advance.

Dan

Sorry about your A Rock. I can't help with the repair except
to suggest that you get the water out first. Am curious though.
How much do you weigh? What kind of fin? Conditions?

I have sailed the HiFly 275 PX a few times on a small lake in
Michigan. I like it. I'm 185 lb. and used it with a 12.6" (32cm)
HiFly G10 fin and 6.8 race to 4.0 bump sails. It probably won't
plane as quickly as the Astro Rock and definitely isn't as stable
at low speed so isn't ideal for marginal 6.8 lake sailing.
Faster though. I had great fun with the 4.0 (an old Northwave
Trilite 1-cam) even though I could have been on a bigger sail.

I was surprised to see a 275 PX come into the dock at Berkeley
with a hole in the nose from a boom hit so I guess they are not
indestructible. I have put alot of time in on the older plastic
HiFly 265 (RX?) here in the San Francisco Bay. Great board.
No problems for me yet. It's too short to get hit by the boom :)

if you would like to try it yourself, check out the book,
"maui boardbuilding & repair" by bill walters (ISBN 0-9630623-0-1)
it details such a repair.

i just replaced the mast box in my (wife's) electric rock.  it
is basically identical to doing a fin box.  i took some photos
and was going to upload the story to a www site sometime this
week..

otherwise: see your local board repair expert, expect to pay
between $50 and $100.
