Los Barrilles, Baja -- Vela vs. Mr. Bill's

I stayed with Mr. Bill last year, and had a great time.  Vela does appear
to have much more equipment, but when I went over there it seemed like a
real zoo -- music blaring, lots of people, etc.  However, Vela does have a
location at the beach that has better wind (on the point) and a slightly
less lethal shore break.  One other thing to consider is getting to Los
Barriles from the Airport:  I recall that some people paid almost $100 for
a ride.  I'm not sure what the alternatives are, but you may want to ask
any likely windsurfing types on your flight if they are headed to Los
Barriles -- the savings could cover your Cerveza budget for the week!!

Enjoy...

Los Barrilles, Baja -- Vela vs. Mr. Bill's

After reading all the recommendations here and calling Suntrips, I got a
cheap flight to Cabo and plan to spend a week in Los Barrilles.  Does
anyone have any suggestions about which place to stay?  I now have
reservations at Mr. Bill's and Vela (Las Palmas Hotel).  I like the idea
of a smaller cheaper place (Mr. Bill's) and dislike the idea of all food
included (at Vela), unless it is exceptional.  But I'm a little wary that
a small place will have a shortage of equipment.
Anyone have experience with either?
Thanks!

I haven't been to either for several years, and the situation changes
every year (mostly it gets more developed), so take any advice with a
grain of salt.

Vela is more of a "downtown" scene.  Hotel to the south, rv park to the
north, houses going up all around, first class gear and plenty of it.  I
like the food just fine, and love the convenience of eating right where I
stay.  I don't have any excess energy left after a windy day.

Mr. Bills is at a more isolated location.  some folks like that, others
don't.  The restaurant there is gorgeous, in a rustic meican/californian
way, much stone and wood and stuffed fish.  Very good food the time I was
there - it was run by Gringos.  Getting to some other place to eat would
involve either having a car or bumming a ride.  I can't comment on Bill's
gear, because I haven't seen any of it, but his beach has many rocks and
onshore wind.  Again, some folks will like the "wave sailing" while others
will be beat up and frustrated.  I think I read something about Mr Bill
driving guests and gear to other spots in the area - who knows if that
will happen...could be fun though.

Either spot will produce a memorable trip.   I'd suggest you try one this
year, the other one next year (like in JANUARY!)

Bien Viajes,

Los Barrilles, Baja -- Vela vs. Mr. Bill's

Someone posted a horror story either last year or two years ago
which detailed the crummy vacation they had with Mr. Bill. I recall
that the lunch menu was basically peanut and butter sandwiches.
I'll try to dig it up...

When I was at Los Barriles in Dec.91, I met some people who stayed
at Los Palmas. One woman told me that she got extremely ill from
the food/water. Other people got sick there as well.
