Is that 29 the stiffness? in MCS? It sounds way stiff, nowadays 25 is the most
useful, just about all sails now use 25. I never even heard of a sail that neede
29. Maybe things are different for 490's.

William,

The masts Exel make are of top quality. They are the supplier for several big companies like North Sails.
The 490/29 mast is suitable for use with big sails, generally >7m2, due its length and stiffness. If you
need a mast for smaller sails the stiffness might be out of the recommended range.

It is.  MCS doesn't account for length-it measures only deflection- but
I(indexed)MCS does by normalizing the deflection to the equivalent on a
460 mast.  The poster may have been referring to an IMCS number.  If I
remember correctly, a 490/29 IMCS will be about equivalent to a 25 MCS. a
430/25 MCS is equiv to a 430/21 IMCS.
Apart from this, many larger sails >6.8 are made for stiffer masts,
although the trend has moderated in the last few years.  I have a 93
Aerotech 7.5 that calls for a 480/30 MCS (34IMCS)... mucho stiff.
Best Regards,
William
