Hatteras in Sept.?

Post by apar.. » Sun, 19 Jan 1997 04:00:00

I am planing a trip to Hatteras for the first or second week of
September. I havent been there that time of year before. Anyone out
there have any info on the conditions? Water/air temp wind speeds, weeds
etc.? I am primarily a sound sailor but would like a chance to try some
waves.

For lodging I am looking at a place offered by Hatteras realty called
the Sound Barrier. It is located on the sound side, acroos from the
Frisco Pier. Any one know anything about this place? I am also looking
at the units at Island Creek but I am a little concerned about the
crowds.

How is the surfing in this area also. Enough questions for now, if you
have the info please respond, cus I want to make a reservation.
Thanx
Anthony

Expect Hatteras to be very warm the first or second week in September.
Water tempertures should be in the low 80's.  This is the height of the
hurricane season so your trip could be ruined.  Still a little early for
the best wind in my opinion but it could be good in early September.

Anthony, I've been going down with a group of friends in late Oct/early
Nov for almost a decade.  The last few years, the wind had been less and less
dependable during this 'good' period.  So who knows...  Sept is not a
'classic' good wind time for Hatteras, but weather systems are so screwy
everywhere these days.  We average about 50% shortboard sailing during
our stays - I'd say your chances are below that.  I'd also say that a
good weed fin would be mandatory.

Although I don't surf, my wife and I vacationed in Avon a couple of
years back (May) and watched some local surfers.  They got some nice but
quite short rides at the spot we were at.  When we talked to them, they
seemed uncaring that a fisherman had pulled in an 11 foot Hammerhead
right off the pier as they were surfing, about 1/4 mile away.  Take
the surfing, it's all yours...

Luck, Gary
