Mistral High Wind Center - Baja Report?

Post by Jeff Sherra » Thu, 09 Jan 1992 09:04:08

I have a friend planning a trip to the Baja High Wind Center.
Has anyone been there this season, or been anywhere on
baja?

Earlier postings stated that the winds were dead due to El nino.
Has this let up at all, is it expected too before March?

Any information on warm water sailing hotspots would be
appreciated.

yes others on the net have had little luck. However a friend just returned from
the Baja Surf Club and said they had a good time with 15-20 mph winds.
Hardly nuking though.

Mistral High Wind Center - Baja Report?

I have a feeling that this is an off month (year?) for Baja.  We have had a
split jet stream situation off the west coast for 4 weeks.  There
have been a lot of low pressure systems going through or***
around Baja.  I think there is one stalled there as I type.  Of
coarse the storm winds might be interesting, but it has to be
messing up the thermals.

Actually, I'm just jealous since one of my local friends took his
truck and camper down for 8 weeks.  I'm sure he's having fun in the
sun windsurfing AND surfing.

I plan to take a leave of absense from work in the next 3 years and
do just that.

p.s.  I made it up to Meadows 5 times on the snowboard over the
break.  The best day I had was "7 inches new- skies of blue."
Snowbording in fresh snow is great!  I encourage all boardheads near
mountains to check it out.  City league snowboard racing starts in 3
weeks.  Go Team Gorge Performance!

Mistral High Wind Center - Baja Report?

I just got back on Jan 5 from a week at the Vela Baja
Highwind center.  The trip was Saturday Dec 28 to Sat Jan 4.

Sat  no wind
Sun  long board weather
Mon  long board weather
Tue  6.5 on an Energy
Wed  6.5/5.4 on an Energy
Thu  6.5 on an Energy
Fri  no wind with a little rain
Sat  Went to see Los Cabos, it also rained

They only had about 6 days of wind in Dec and it only looked
like one of them was better than 5.0 weather.

I enjoyed being in Mexico and the mountain biking.  Vela was
great.  The wind was not there though.  It just goes to show
that you can get skunked where ever you go.

The locals there claim that Mid January through February
is the best time to go for wind.

I might add that my 1:50 PM scheduled departure time flight
did not get into SFO until 3:50 AM the next morning due to
equipment problems.  This should have been a 3 hr flight
Contrary to their supposedly great reputation I do not
think Alaska Airlines treated their passangers very well.
I guess that I should be happy that I got home safe and that
they gave me a $50 coupon good towards future travel on Alaska
Airlines within the next year.
